Intermittent drip from HW tank

Me again, another minor problem with my new house!
The HW tank is a Megaflo tank, and there is an intermittent drip from the pipe outside coming from the pressure reflief valve. The user guide for the tank has instructions for recharging the expansion air volume which should stop this (close off mains supply, turn on hot tap and open pressure relief valve, wait until flow stops, and turn on supply again).

Is this a fairly common thing to have to do? And canI expect any dramas or does it normally go off without a hitch? Just after a bit of reassurance really.

You could follow instructions and yes this is common and needs doing regularly, like once a year. This reinstates the expansion bubble.

BUT one of the instructions is to have it serviced anually by A COMPETENT PERSON. Nobody else will be insured to touch it. You will unfortunately find it difficult to find someone as we're in short supply.

We've only just moved in and were looking into getting a service contract for the system. Is it worth paying monthly for a service contract to cover everything, or just pay for an annual service and hope nothing major goes wrong while the system is still fairly new?

Don't leave regenerating the expansion bubble or you will possibly wear the valve seat. Just follow the instructions.

For insurance, count up the number of servicable bits and pieces you have, and then put some money aside and then you will have some to spend on whatever goes wrong as not all of them will be a problem. The heating system is unfortunately the one most likely to.

Well I've done it!
Seemed fairly straightforward, although it went much quicker when I opened a downstairs hot tap instead of upstairs.

Thanks again for your help oilman, I shall check tomorrow for the tell-tale wet patch by the pipe outside, hopefully this problem is now fixed though.

I will also think about getting a service contract.
