Perhaps Maggie (often mis-quoted) was correct......
..."We've been through a period where too many people have been given to understand that if they have a problem, it's the government's job to cope with it. 'I have a problem, I'll get a grant'. 'I'm homeless, the government must house me.' They're casting their problems on society. And you know, there's no such thing as society. There are individual men and women, there are families. And no government can do anything except through people, and people must look after themselves first. It's our duty to look after ourselves and then, also, to look after our neighbours. People have got their entitlements too much in mind, without the obligations."...

What about all this 'time' business?
One would think, with the number of people having 'no time' that within five or six years we'll be inundated with millionaires as all that 'time' invested pays off .... Yes, right, it may just cover losses of pension entitlement .. may increase value of homes, such that eventually have to subsidise children's homes.... Time well spent ! Could it be that if one continues living high (actually low) on time -- it becomes an addiction, the only release ... looking at the lid !

Then why so many posts in the past criticising the Government??

Assuming that the first quote was correct (and I vaguely remember it), this bit

It's our duty to look after ourselves and then, also, to look after our neighbours.

says rather a lot! Do you think the bit about looking after the neighbours was an afterthought? On the other hand this bit

People have got their entitlements too much in mind, without the obligations.

is quite true but appears to contradict the first quote. After all, part of looking after yourself would surely include claiming all your entitlements!!!

But I didn't come here to slag off the milk snatcher. Where is she now anyway; having tea and biscuits with Mugabe?

I don't think there's anything new about having no time. Prehistoric humans can have had little time for much besides survival. We, however, do have a choice. This question has appeared in a slightly different form in another thread. It had something to do with "Why are South Europeans so lazy"? Wrong question. Why do we North Europeans work our butts off without much thought as to whether we really need the money?

You're probably right about house prices. One side effect of large numbers of women getting proper jobs (with proper pay) was that house prices doubled. It's an interesting exercise to observe how prices have changed in real money over the decades. An easy way to do this (approximately) is to use the Mars bar index. If you can remember how much a Mars bar cost when you were first old enough to buy one (5d - that's old money - in 1960) you can see how things have gone up.

There are some curious anomalies. Food has come down slightly, except for fish and chips which have doubled - and not just the fish. Cars have come down quite a lot and televisions have gone through the floor. Beer has doubled but spirits are down and a roundabout ride that once cost 0.6 Mars bars will now set you back at least two and a half. At four times the rate of inflation I think that's got to top the rip-off charts; unless you know different!

Well I went to the pictures yesterday - Me, My Wife, One 5-year old and One 3-year old (to see Madagascar, if you're really interested). Sunday morning, special rate - £20.80. I actually made that sort of 'Oo-Choo-Choo' noise that Boss Hogg used to make whenever he'd been thwarted (or am I thinking of Buford T. Justice ?) when the girl asked me to hand over my money.

Fortunately I took my own DC and crisps, rather than spend out on more nachos, popcorn and minstrels once I got in there.

It was the 3-year old's first visit to the cinema. I suspect it will also be his last, en famille.....

I remember going to the cinema (or 'pictures' as we called it then) for 6d (sixpence). I don't know what the adult price was so lets assume 1s (a shilling). That means you would have paid 3s altogether or just over seven Mars bars at 5d each. My daughter informs me that a Mars bar now costs 40p and so your trip to the cinema should have been about £3 in total.

Yep, it seems that you know different. Roundabouts just dropped into second place! This is in spite of the fact that we now have cplour TV and video. What's going on?

What i meant pip is that you posted that quote about people wrongly complaining about how it's all the government's fault yet you have been one of it's main critics on here?

Too right .. they (have all) said they could do the job ... Look where we are now, glad I do not live/work in the smoke !!
Ken'll sort it out .. And why not?
