Not happy with engineer's work, need second opinion

Any information about service and makel & model of boiler available?

Its a Baxi 80Eco, 10 years old with an Altech wireless stat/programmer.
Serviced 12months ago when thermistor replaced.

Annoyingly, my heating came on at 530 and it's stayed on with no apparent problems so far, in complete defiance of everything its been doing for the past 3 weeks! Grrr, but also, woohoo! lol

What do you expect from a Baxi 80e!!!
in cold weather a 24Kw Combi is going to struggle to heat the hot water to "normal levels" due to very cold inlet water temperatures

Baxi 80 is an average boiler TBH! ;)

There are so many things that an above average engineer would be checking.

When we go to a boiler which has an intermittent fault like that then we check the ignition electrodes and gaps, HT cable and insulation etc.

Then there is the spark generator and checking the voltage supplied to it.

Then the contact resistances on the APS and the applied and the operating pressures!

Lastly and most importantly the gas valve mechanical settings and the PCB gas valve settings ( in that order ).

Not many engineers bother with all that. Most just want to get on to the next job. Its a bit odd but those who are most likely to do it properly are the older ones, its not logical but it usually seems to be the case.

Now we are getting somewhere. Still waiting for the answer to question 'how long did the service take?'

Must admit I like this boiler and way it is made. Am lead to believe this design of boiler was the turning point for Baxi Potterton after the company bought over french boiler company/ ies in order to market a combi boiler. Mechanism/ layout similar to Alpha 240 combination boiler.

Looked at history of posts by jwturpin. A year plus few days ago issues with hot water delivery. While boiler would supply 'sufficient' water to a shower, no combi will be able to match the performance of an unvented cylinder or be able to deliver hot water to 'tropical rain spray head' type shower. Another question that begs to be asked is what is the inlet pressure with other gas appliances running as this may well be the cause of a baseline boiler performing miserably due to lack of stipulated burner pressure. As present post suggests, water quality also an issue as HWHE blocked by system debris resulting in hot and cold water supply at the tap.

Thu Nov 04, 2010 8:22 am Problem with control, not the boiler. Low pressure on boiler could be any loss of pressure main culprit being 'bleeding air from radiator'

i'm no plumber, but problem 1 cost me £45 call out and £5 part + VAT, and problem two cost me £45 call out and £80 part.

while on Novenber 16th a mention of £295 was made for repairs.

Brings us to present. Seeing the history of problems, I cannot fault the repair person. Dirty system water will effect hot water heat exchanger. PCB on this type of boiler do have a tendency to fail buy hey, boiler is 10 years old and relay operations do result in wear and tear of contacts, so quite acceptable to replace an odd PCB after 10 years. External controls- well fitting a good control would give better results than a cheap and cheerful unit- my choice is TP5000Si which has yet to let me down.

Replacement radiator lead to circulation problems. I wonder if it effected boiler operation itself as internal flow switch would be looking for 'nil air' on primary circuit for positive operation.

Well, I wasn't in at the time and left keys for guyto come in, and it was a year ago, but I guess around an hour as he'd said he'd be there at 4, and allowing for lateness due to prefvious jobs, I returned home about 530ish and he'd been and gone, so I guess about an hour(approx)??

Well about 5 months ago the gas company were in the area doing safety checks and Iasked them to look at my meter as it was making a "cranking" sound and seemed to be using more gas than I would have expected considering it was summer and I only had 1 shower a day using the gas, but my bill was hefty!

They came and checked, replaced the diaphragm in the meter as he said it may have stretched as it was 25 years old.

To the point though, while doing this, he checked the inlet gas pressure, and said it was good.

Thank you all for your replies and advice!!

I think as a result of what I've read, i'll have the same guy come back and fix it as a temporary measure, but i'm scrapping the Baxi and having a new one put in!

Thanks again everyone
