Hi All,

Who is authorised to pull a main fuse? Or does it differ from DNO to DNO?
Mine being Electricity Northwest.

Only reason I ask is I am having a full rewire done and 1 spark said he'd remove the main fuse and then reseal it again as he has seals. Now on the fuse itself is an old tape seal (broken) with Norweb on it, that says not only is it dangerous to remove but it is also illegal on it.

Should I be wary of a spark who offers to remove the fuse, without even notifying the DNO?

Cheers

Craig

Tell him your concerns and that you are willing to pay the extra costs involved and for any delays whilst waiting for DNO to turn up.

Alternatively, just let him get on with the job.

The DNO are pretty much the only people permitted to remove the fuse.

As for whether or not you should trust a spark who says he'll remove it, well, just have a bit of a look around this place and I think you'll find the answer. ==> ;) <==

Hi Craig, check your contract terms and conditions with your supplier and you will find that you are responsible for any damage to the supplier's or the DNO's property.

I will not pull service fuses because it is illegal - yes there is timing issue and a cost issue with DNO's pulling the fuse but I always try to persuade the customer and/or the DNO to fit an isolator between the meter and the CU after they have pulled the fuse so that they do not have to return.

We used to have forms to send to the DNO for when we had cut the seals to the meter, they would then arrange to come and re-seal the meter. Not sure it that still happens but I think I still have some of the forms somewhere.

Not used in Electricity Northwest, send one in and a wrist slap would follow!

(The same applied with the predecessors Norweb & United Utilities)

My comments are only based on my experience with my DNO, I didn't know if it applied everywhere, now i know :)

My DNO came to investigate the earth at my request, they just cut off the seals, yanked the fuse out, did a quick test and F offed, and said "stick the earth in the neutral it'll be fine". They didn't bother resealing it.

There is also a henley block between the supply and the new meter.

If only i was dishonest i would siphon off the elec...
