Hi all,

Have one of those pull cord switches in main bathroom, i don't like em with kids about. It's a new house. I know i could shorten it but i'd rather explore another avenue. I don't know why swicth ain't outside room on wall like en-suite.

Anyway, can i simply replace this pull cord switch with a PIR sensor switch??

Or, anyone any other ideas?

Cheers,

What is the pull switch for? A light, the shower or an extractor fan or something else?

Don't forget to get a camera ready for the picture of you sitting on the loo waving your hands like a mad man to get the damn thing to come back on.

Ha, if i set PIR timer to an hour, that should suffic. or i'll nod off, not for the first time!!

Cheers,

Doh, sorry, it's a light switch!

This should do the trick:

Sorry for dragging up an old thread, but was wondering if the PIR suggested here would be okay to run an extractor fan as well as the light?

Thanks in advance.

Yes. Extractor fans only consume 20W and lights only 8W so well within the switching capability of the PIR unit.

Thanks for that info.
Can they be used so that the extractor fan will still continue to run for the preset time after the PIR unit has sitched off the light?
How should this be wired? If I take a switched live from the PIR to both the fan and the light, How will the fan continue to run after the PIR has switched off?

In just the same way as it would if the light was switched off conventionally by an on/off switch. The fan will have a permanent live feed to allow the fan to continue running after the switch has turned off or the PIR has timed out.

The switched live is only a trigger to activate the fan.

There are two different issues here and you need to be careful not to mix them up.

As far as I am aware this PIR has a maximum five minute loop so as long as you keep moving about in the shower and waving your hands or whatever in the PIR's direction the light and extractor fan will continue for five minutes after you leave the room. Remember the PIR is just a glorified on off switch with a built in timer.

You don't say whether your extractor fan has a timer over-run. If it does then the fan will remain on for 5 minutes (PIR max) plus whatever you have set the fan timer at. Provided that is that you have provided the extractor fan with both a live and switch live - plus Neutral and possibly earth.

If the fan does not have an timer over-run then it will switch off when the PIR switches off. The fan will work of the PIR's switch live.

Assuming the fan is a timer model, it will have terminals for

permanent live, switched live, and neutral.

So you will need to used 3core and earth.

Do not cut off the earth if it is not required but sleeve green&yellow and terminate safely.

Thanks for all the help, I'm replacing a broken extractor fan in my ensuite with this model;

Decided to replace the noisy pull switch with a PIR at the same time.

Thanks again.
This is the timer model so as EFL said you will need three core and earth 1mm ² should be sufficient and run it from the PIR's live (brown), Switch live (grey (brown sleeve), neutral (black) and earth (yellow green) to the fans equivalent terminals.

However::::
Most fans instructions will require a three pole isolator and/or a 3Amp fused connection unit (for maintenance purposes) to qualify for their guarantee. It is up to you whether you follow their guidance.
