Stench Pipe Stinks

Hi

I recently redecorated the downstairs loo for my mother. In doing this I took the extractor out which was fitted directly into the stench pipe. My mother ( bless her ) decided it would be a good idea to put it into soak, therefore B*****ing it. The smell from the pipe was disgusting. I replaced the extractor and the smell was still there. I then added an insert of flapping doors which has had little affect. The house is old with bits added on, but from what I can gather there is the upstairs bathroom of a toilet bath basin and shower. the kitchen sink with waste disposal fitted, a sink in the utility room and the downstairs toilet with wash basin. Is there anything I can try and flush the system through with and where would I enter it into the system. All suggestions welcome !

Check the manhole to see if there are any blockages.

Are you telling us that an electrical extractor fan is fitted to a drain Vent Pipe

Something seems fishy about this, and I don't mean the drain. How can you only "gather" that there is a toilet, sink, etc in your own mother's house - has she never let you go uptairs?

Are you sure it's not you who has messed up in your own house....?

OK I braved the elements and pulled the cover up and ran a few taps and all is flowing fine so no blockage there.

Hi chaps

My mothers diet does include a lot of fish. When I say gather I mean there are other wash basins in the house but connected on the other side to the old system so I dont think part of the problem. As long as the stench pipe is the one that runs up to the roof with a cap on, then yes someone has put an eletric extractor fan into a 4inch pipe into the side of it. I'm a painter and decorator so I could be wrong as to the name of that pipe. And no I havent be messing around with her drains

If its called a stench pipe then its only to be expected that it will be smelly!

Venting a fan into it is not the expected way to ventilate a room but if its a fan with closing flaps then it should not be that smelly?

The kitchen sink does not smell to good either and according to mother she always rinses it at night before bed. Is there something on the market to flush it through ? I'm a bit wary with chemicals as sometimes they seem to do more damage than good.

The answer is to cap off the pipe that the fan was attatched to and refit the fan elsewhere.

hinged flaps won't contain the stench. it will always be smelly. If the kitchen sink smells too then maybe there is something wrong with the trap under the sink?

I tend to agree with wabbitpoo on the relocation although it wont be easy. And I'll have a look at the trap. Thanks chaps.

Hi all

Apologies for taking so long to reply but I have just moved and been up to my eyes in figuring out how to make a 30 year old suspended ceiling attractive. ( quite pleased ) Anyway Lots of Chemicals seems to have cleared the smell. I wonder if it may have been a dead rat as my mother spotted one a while ago and the council put down poison. No idea how it would have got in the system but it is a theory.
