Guys, really need your assistance on this. I simply need to know if as a general rule, plumbers DO guarantee their work - and for approximately how long? Having said that, I don't know what sort of problems could occur say a few months down the line but still, what period of guarantee would respectable, honest plumbers give?
Can you pls spare me a few moments and reply. Thank you.

Yes good plumbers do. I do for 1 year unless it's a faulty part (not my fault) as long as the fault wasn't caused by a bad install

I do... 12 months on all work done, 5 years on boiler installs provided that the customer accepts my reccomendations and that I service the boiler annually

The warranty will depend on the type of work.

If you are having all new equipment installed then it is reasonable to expect a comeback if something fails within a reasonable period, after all, it has to be fit for purpose.

If you have a 10 year old Keston boiler, and I come round and fix it (an extremely unlikely scenario cause I won't repair boilers we haven't fitted but bear with me), and it goes wrong two months later....

Then, it is only a warranty issue if the second failure is attributable to the work I did earlier. Chances are, it's another, unrelated failure. So it is at your cost if this is the case.

We guarantee the work that we do for at least a year.

But in relation to boiler repairs ONLY in respect of the actual repair itself and not in relation to any new faults.

But....if we have diagnosed and repaired a fault and another fault occurs, we will usually diagnose another fault free within three months but any parts required are extra and if its in a difficult location we would make another diagnostic charge. Central London is always a difficult location.

But why are you asking?

Tony

Hi Simon, thanks for that. Guarantee covering a bathroom installation - assume plumbers give a reasonable guarantee period for their work though unsure what can go wrong a little way down the line .... taps maybe???? China wear should be covered by the manufacturer???? Sink coming away from a wall?? I don't know. This is a grey area for me but surely all good plumbers do guarantee their work - but for how long?

The guarantee you get depends on the quality of the installer you used.

In general, I happily give a 5 year warrantee on installation work, provided it can be done as it should.
There is the rare occasion where working to spec is not possible due to local circumstances e.g. a freeholder/downstairs neighbour who won't allow access, in which case I make very sure that everybody involved understands that it is not done as I want it and thus not covered by the normal warrantee.

As my installs are generally fool-proof, child-proof and monkey-proof, they do cost a bit more than the cheapest quote people get.

Thanks for that. You must be good to give a 5 yr warranty. Difficult to say quality of installer used as never used them before. Do have small problems with bathroom installation which he intends to sort for me - don't know yet though what he intends to do about the toilet and sink/pedestal which he did not actually screw to the floor/wall. Maybe glued-don't know yet?? Previous plumber on this forum advised that the china wear guarantee may be affected if it is not installed to their guidelines.

Thank you very much for this. Will bear it in mind. Guess they charge Vat though - having said that once you have encountered problems the vat element seems less important in exchange for 'peace of mind' and trust in the people you are using. Thanks again, and thanks for website info.

Thanks very much. Useful information. May I just enquire in terms of running a gas fire as opposed to putting on the central heating (combi boiler) which, in general, is cheaper to run. Someone recently advised me that a gas fire costs more to run but can that be??

A modern boiler is 80-90% efficient, a fire 50-70%. Add to that the losses through the chimney from natural draft, and you could end up at 30-50%.
Conventional fires are extremely inefficient.
