DO PLUMBERS GUARANTEE THEIR WORK?

We guarantee the work that we do for at least a year.

But in relation to boiler repairs ONLY in respect of the actual repair itself and not in relation to any new faults.

But....if we have diagnosed and repaired a fault and another fault occurs, we will usually diagnose another fault free within three months but any parts required are extra and if its in a difficult location we would make another diagnostic charge. Central London is always a difficult location.

But why are you asking?

Tony

Hi Tony
Thanks for your feedback. I made the mistake of hiring a plumber, cash deal, no vat, trusted his word to come back if any problems developed but I don't think I established how long his guarantee would last - I would have thought most plumbers would guarantee their work for at least one year. I had a new bathroom fitted. My problems are a result of his work not being right immediately after his finished. He has now agreed to see me next week and I just wanted some knowledge at the back of me. My biggest worry has been the fact that he didn't fix the toilet/sink/pedestal to floor/wall. I know china wear can last years but my feelings are they should have been properly fixed and if it would affect the manufacturers guarantee? He also fitted a new shower riser and now my shower doesn't work properly (shouldn't be a connection I know but??). New pedestal is also showing the 2 pipes at the back (previous pedestal didn't). Guess I'll have to live with the installation as I can't see him offering to re-install toilet/sink (sink isn't even flush with the wall).

That is very unfortunate, particularly when so many work hard do do the best job possible.

But I am sorry to have to say that you seem to be significantly to blame for agreeing a cash only no vat deal which precludes you from taking any action against him for shoddy work as you have no receipt.

Amusingly to me, MOST of those who offer a cash/no vat deal are not even VAT registered and use the VAT angle to help you to pay them with cash and no receipt! That enables them to both avoid tax and to also enable them to do shoddy work without any chance of a legal claim.

Hi Tony, I didn't realise I would have no claim against him. Bolting the toilet down would be more straightforward (I think) than the sink/pedestal, however, can I insist that he does? If they should be fixed to the wall/floor - can he refuse to do it? Ok, I guess you are going to say that he can but, REALLY, can he refuse? I paid him in full so he's not waiting for any money. I sent an email to Ideal Standard for clarification of their guarantee but so far have not replied to me.
Just one more thing Tony, can you just clarify if tilers, in general, would use the customer's brand new bath to clean their tools/tubs of tiling cement, etc..?? The clicker waste still has 'cement or grouting stuff' in it and I expect him to clean the back yard when all this cement gunge poured out of a temporary waste pipe which the plumber fitted and didn't tell the tiler.
Your kind help is much appreciated.

Paul, thank you very much for your feedback. If this is NOT the normal procedure for tilers then what is the NORM? Should they take their stuff home to clean or use an outside tap (if you have one)? I didn't know he had cleaned his stuff until I heard this almighty noise outside - looked out and saw the dirty water pouring from the temporary waste pipe. Some of this gunge is still in my clicker waste and he scratched the bath (albeit a small one).
Feedback once again would be much appreciated.

Someone recently advised me that a gas fire costs more to run but can that be??

A modern boiler is 80-90% efficient, a fire 50-70%. Add to that the losses through the chimney from natural draft, and you could end up at 30-50%.
Conventional fires are extremely inefficient.

No, Ben, the efficiency figures take into account the heat loss up the flue. To be fair, these are tested on a test "standard", so actual site efficincies will slightly vary, but what you are saying isn't factual. Having said that, inset tray or basket fires ARE extremely innefficient, and most makers won't give an efficiency figure, but where they do, it is normally "up to" 20%. OUCH!. The actual site efficiencies will vary much more on these than a modern HE fire, and can actually be NEGATIVELY efficient.

To answer the OP's question, if you only want to heat the living room, the fire will be cheaper than the heating, subject to the type of fire and type of heating system. If you want to heat the whole house, then use the living room rad, that will be cheaper than the fire. It is amazing the number of folk who have had the rad removed as they have a gas fire.
