We have an old fashioned CH setup - heater tank in the loft, not a high pressure or sealed system. For some reason one radiator keeps collecting air. There's no water leaks. Where is the air coming from?

Magnetite (gunge) in the system produces its own gas - hydrogen.
Its a fun trick to light it when its bled off (only on totally metal bleed valves!) Often impresses the neighbours.

Probably a good start would be to take the affected radiator off the wall, into the garden for a good flush through with a hose pipe...there is certain to be some black muck in there but no one knows how much.
When you bleed the rad is the water black that comes out?

The water is black, yes. It's been drained down several times in the last 3 years, and always had inhibitor put back in it. At one point I added a flushing agent for a few weeks first.

That radiator is about to come off and be replaced with a smaller one. It's the 2nd one in the circuit. The first one gets a bit of air, but a lot less than the 2nd one does. Surely where ti collects depends on height differences around the system, doesn't it?

is it a towel rail? They are more prone to corrosion and esp if on hot water circuit. Dont bled rad when pump is on and rad hot. Switch boiler/pump off wait til rad cold then bleed the put boiler/pump on again.
Air always collects in highest rad. Hot air jighter than cold air, hot water hence the reasnn u will always find it there.
