Hi
Have got a broken drain cover on my property, its the main drain access for neighbours drains too. Its a rectangle shape its holding together but its in 2 pieces.
Been told that you cant buy just the cover anymore and will have to dig out the frame to renew the whole thing at roughly £350.
I was hoping to just buy a new cover and pop it on, can I just buy a cover or should I look into replacing the whole thing?

Thankyou for your advice.

I guess this is the two triangle one?
Long established builders merchants should be able to get them - not cheap though at around £150 (last year).
Do measure it accurately before you go hunting!
John :)

Normally you need to replace the cover and the frame, because different manufacturers aren't interchangeable.

The frame will only be buried a few inches though and should come out with an afternoon's work with a pickaxe

If you are talking about a standard manhole cover (rectangular, silver with 2 handles/holes) then they are available from B&Q and Wickes, at around £20 with the frame.

Mine was rusted and flimsy and needed replacing so I looked at them last summer. I measured the existing cover and purchased one that had the exact same measurements on the label, hoping that the lid would fit the existing frame. However, much to my annoyance, when I got home I found that the new one was exactly the same width as the original but some 30mm longer. (You may be luckier!)

In the end, I had to replace the frame and cover which did mean digging out the surrounding slabs, cutting them to fit and re-bedding them around the new one.

Assuming this is the type you are looking for, then I would suggest £350 seems rather steep for a job that took me, alone, only about 4 hours. Of course, any remedial work concerning your replacement may differ greatly thus increasing labour and material costs.

thanks everyone for your helpful info.

"2 triangle" not sure about that.

Will have a look at it tomorrow.

There is a builders merchants we can look at, will do that at weekend.

Cheers.

From the local tip/recycling centre  they quite often keep the covers/rims

what's it made of? if it's cast iron you might be able to get it welded locally. It's a specialist job but certainly possible.

In case anybody was wondering, a little while after I made these posts, the sewage company took over responsibility of all manholes and drains on peoples property, so I just waited for a bit and they replaced the cover...with no cost to us..yay!

:D

Thanks for all your helpful replies.
