Just took down an old fluorescent tube light fitting in my kitchen. the only wires I can see are 2 RED wires connected together in some sort of ceramic connector that looks like a miniature police helmet and its not attached to anything. and 2 black wires going to the fitting. I can only think this is some sort of 60's wiring when the house was built..leaving the loop floating about? can I just connect the two black wires to new halogen lights?

You need to work out which of the blacks is live, and sleeve it accordingly.

And follow homslaws advice re earthing.

Thanks for the help.I will check tomorrow which is live.. Earth is problem as cant get to it via floor boards as its under the bath. cant get them up with out taking all the bath out. I maybe able to run an earth along the beam and down to the sink. I will look. Cheers.

Unfortunately its not quite as easy as that, you may be better off just buying a class 2 double insulated light fitting.

Is there no earths at any point of your lighting circuit?

Dont know how else to get an earth there? there is no route up into bathroom. the only way I see off getting an earth to the light is to take a earth cable along the beam. down though the cupboard and down to the earth cable that's connected to the Cold water pipe that has a connection to the consumer unit. I know it sounds weird but cant see any other way off getting an earth to the new light. Without taking all the bath out and up the floor boards. there is no route to put a new earth there. Maybe I sould just put back the old tube?

Don't run an CPC to the earth bond on the sink earthing and bonding are 2 totally different concepts.

If your installation is an old one you may find that the lighting systems is wired without an earth and as posted before this is not a real problem if you use class II fittings.

It sounds like the installation is wired in twin and earth. Is there any slack on the cables? Again you may find that the earth is just snipped off, and if you can strip some of the outer sleeve off you may find the an earth. This would entail you though having to go back along the system reconnecting each point until you reach the CU, but it would make your installation safer. Again this was done perhaps 30+ years ago as the sparks then never regarded fitting a CPC to a lighting circuit important.

Thank you every one. I checked and there is only 2in of cable showing and it will not come out so cant find an earth. I fear that there is none. checked a couple of other down stair lights.

I came from the old school and changing a light we just did it. I now know that with all this part P stuff that you have to have this and that and done by a sparks. So with out further a do.. until I can afford a new fitted Kitchen!!! I going to put back the old fluorescent... as I don't think I can afford a Class II as on the web the cheapest was £140 that I found. Anyway without your expertise I would never have known all this So Thank you.. Just got to tell the wife..OMG

Your right thanks.. Yes it was an old metal 5ft flu. I will talk with the wife about it as I hate not having every thing safe. but as we all know money is tight. and I'm just trying to brighten up the kitchen with just a cheep a paint job.

I had a new consumer unit fitted last year because I felt the old one was a bit old. God it was and old metal thing with old fuse wire. and they could not be replaced so had new one...and I remember now he said something about the light circuit need replacing..

should have stayed in my old rented.. 1 thing always leads to another.

you have all been wonderful Thanks very much God bless the Internet.

For future reference, I can recommend taking down a plasterboard ceiling. It is surprisingly straightforward and gives great access to wiring and plumbing. It also allows you to check the condition of the joists under the bath.

Actually what you have to have is reasonable provision made in the design and installation of electrical installations in order to protect persons operating, maintaining or altering the installations from fire or injury, which doesn't seem outrageous or unjustifiable to me.

Did you get an Electrical Installation Certificate, and then not long after a Building Regulations Completion certificate?
