Bought built in electric oven and gas hob from Comet for them to install.

First engineers said they COULD fit oven and hob but we needed to sort the electrics out at the back as they were unsafe - we did this and 2 different engineers came out a few days later.

Those engineers walked straigth in - looked at the cupboards - got out a measuring tape and because cupboards above-to side of hob are 3cm too low, said they couldn't fit the hob ( so didn't even bother looking at fitting the oven - saying we would obviously get a refund on the £84.99 fitting fee). It also now looks like our our new oven is too long to fit in the recess without affecting the current gas pipe.

Old/current oven is 530mm deep. Can't find them anymore so we got a 550mm deep one as this appears to be about the standard for modern fitted ovens; however this looks like resulting in following options:

1 Move gas pipe to side or chisel a grove in back wall to accommodate gas pipe for hob. The first comet gas fitter didn't seem to think this would be a problem who told my wife he could fit some kind of flexi hose and this would work.

2 Cap off gas pipe and get an electric hob. (which might be easier all round)

Have called 4 local people to come and quote sometime this week. Sooooooo frustrating...

the fitter is right, if the wall units are too low he cant fit the hob, end of, there will be a queue a mile long to slag him off if the unit gets scorched, re the depth of the oven, if the work top is 600mm deep your oven should go in no prob, if the previous gas pipe is too far from the wall it will need to be moved, not too big a job, its the wall units that are gonna cause you the prob, might be easier to check electric hob fitting instructions for clearences to wall units, i'm certain the restrictions for electric will be less than gas so it might be easier than wrecking the kitchen

Thanks for the info. Am I right in thinking if I do get a GasSafe guy in to cap the existing gas pipe, I am allowed to fit the electric oven and electric hob myself? It should be a straight enough fit.

What I'd do is chisel yer groove, mate.

With a 3" bolster chisel (just a few £ from Toolstation) and a club hammer it shouldn't be difficult, unless your walls are solid stone.

Tip: wear earplugs. Hitting a metal chisel in a confined space = ringing in your ears.

Will 3cm really make that big a difference when it comes to scorching? You said the cupboards are to the side, right?

Unless you're all set for induction (right pans & all), electric hobs are a dreadful cooking experience.
