First post so be gentle - Signed up for BG HomeCare a week ago after someone at work recommended them having had a boiler failure. Thought would be a good idea.

2 Days later when running a bath Hot water would run for a bit then run cold for a few seconds then return to hot. Warm enough for a bath so living with it.

Yesterday, Central heating on and ran a sink of water for washing up... Warm at first then COLD and didn't come back warm.

Went to check Boiler (under house in a garage) and first three red leds flashing with last one be Fan/Flue Failure.

Reset boiler using knob

Came back on some clicks and then Central heating fired up. Finished washing up and went out leaving heating on. Came home to a chilly house, checked therm and clock and all suggested it was on so checked boiler - Once again Flashing LED for Flue / Fan failure.

Another Reset and heating would come back on again.

Turned straight off to investigate further

Removed cover and inner plate to check fan ... Fan would spin cleanly, fired boiler up and everything kicked in to life.

Replaced inner and outer cover - But after a while approx. 1-2hours heating went off again.

So assume that BG Homecare would not cover me even if I waited another 6 days as pre-existing condition, what are my best options without getting ripped off by someone (bad experience in a previous property damaged my trust in Yellow Pages engineers! - sorry guys/gals).

Should I wait then call BG and try claim?
Should I call BG now and plead with them for a fixed repair (how much would this be?) at a discount
Should I find another engineer - I have the installers number

Having looked at this forum have seen a multiple of suggestions from Fans/PCB/Venturi/Air Pressure Switch etc. having researched prices have seen anything from £100 for Fan/PCB to a few quid for other parts. So concerned that I get a huge bill for a cheap part.

Advice before I freeze and the Mrs kicks my head in for having no hot water (thank good for the electric shower!).

Help? :?:

You need to grow some b******s , be a man and realise that life costs if you're no good at DIY.

Why do most people come on the forum for advice and then think every gas engineer out there is going to rip them off???

Just had my van repaired £500 thats life ,thats what it costed ,didn't think garage was going to rip me off when i took it in,parts and labour cost money.

Because I have been ripped off before as I said - I appreciate the advice I have read on this forum because there seems to be many people who seem to care and want to help. If you can honestly say that every tradesperson is 100% and will not rip someone off then you are far more trusting than I am. I posted on here for advice.

I have them and know that this will cost and happy to pay a fair price was seeking advice - Would suggest that working with Gas is a little more than average DIY - Quite happy to work with Electrics/Water but I don't do Gas.

Are these responses just a Sunday night I don't want to goto work on a Monday thing? Or does the average Joe not get a look in and its a trades to trades site?

have bg already done their 'first visit' and checked the boiler? if so they will repair it under your homecare, had a similar fault on this boiler and found a spider had set up home in the venturi!

OP- Your post is about money. Heating just happens to be the thing you're having to spend it on, in this instance.

Thanks PaultheGas - Not as yet, signed up a week ago (cannot believe my luck) Paperwork has not even arrived as yet .. Spiders is an interesting one as there were quite a few (dead ones!) behind the inner plate. Is removal of the venturi a safe thing to do for a Novice not wanting to play with Gas?

Not bothered about spending money, just want to make sure I am spending on the right part/engineer. Happy to pay the £170 to BG if they fix it, even better if they would discount it for me signing up for HomeCare. I don't mind paying for good service and a true fix.

so would you advise the op to mess around with the flue on his boiler?

You should not be advising him to do this forum rules..

as a qualified gas fitter you should know this.
