I have no key for the lock handle on my garage door so want to replace it.

Unfortunately I know nothing about who manufactured the door, when etc etc.

I've been looking around and I _think_ it might be an old henderson handle and that the 'T' handles on this page may be correct:

http://www.garage-door-spares.co.uk/henderson-handle.htm

Not sure what 'spigot' size would be needed but I guess I can remove the old one and measure.

What's bothering me is, firstly, is this the right kind of lock, I really have no idea other than it looks about right. I've attached some pictures.

Also, there's a rectangular plate attached to the square shaft in my pictures, that is the bit the wire attaches to normally. Do I reuse the one from my old handle/lock?

Help! :)

Re-use the plate - its probably held on by a split pin or clip. Take the old one out, measure the spindle length and screw centres - and order away.

Why don't you remove the lock and take to a local locksmith, they may be able to make up a key for you.

I was very surprised when my local managed to do this for my garage lock.

I originally purchased a cheap lock off ebay but it was the incorrect size, so I took them to the locksmith to ask about changing some of the bits over and he said how about I just make up a key for the old lock?

Job done!!!

Give it a go!!

Cheers

Normally I'd agree with you, but in the case of lost/missing keys - you don't know who has a key, so best to fit a new one with new keys.

Note: These are only simple wafer locks, and very easy to defeat - so I'd also look at putting some additional security on the door bottom (garage defender or padlock).
