My daughter's PC did an automatic, overnight Windows update on 14th April. Since then it been unwell,

- boots up but when she clicks on her account it just freezes
- goes into her account and works ok, when she logs off it again freezes whilst displaying "saving your settings"
- randomly freezes when entering hibernation mode
- freezes when trying to come out of hibernation

Each time it then needs a manual reboot. IE7 has been patchy.

A similar thing happened while ago after another Windows update, that time I rebooted her PC a couple of times and it seemed to cure itself. This time thats not working. I tried doing a system restore to 13th April but it came back and said it had failed since there hadn't been any changes.

The last time it happened the only software that had a problem was the EdiMax wireless PC card utility, which I had to set up again. I've tried that this time too but without success.

What can I do?

Just had the same problem with mine, restoring to an earlier date cured it. Not sure if it was related to Windows update or Adobe update done at a similar time as I have reloaded the Windows updates again after restore & now working fine. Have not tried Adobe update yet.

Gone more than a month back but still no luck. After selecting a new restore point the PC tries to shutdown and then locks up, so I end up having to manually turn it off.

When I switched it on it seems to work fine, but when I log off and come back after say an hour its frozen whilst trying to go into sleep mode. Turned off sleep mode, now when I come back its displaying some funny HP (its a HP PC) image that I've not seen before and the normal XP windows (displaying the list of users) never appears. I then have to manually reboot again.

What going on?

You should have got a Mac mate. None of those problems there

I see you're back, Mr. Troll.

Say, do you recall the old OS X 'feature' of wiping out all your data when you use a guest account? Ah, quality software.

You wouldn't understand. Too technical for ordinary people

I'm not 'ordinary people'. I understand operating systems on a level you cannot.

Off to a Vincent Motorcycle Rally now so cannot read anything here. Macs don't work away from base.

Bye brown dick

Wow, because my Windows and Linux boxes work everywhere!

So much for your superior platform.

Aaaanyway, on the subject:

It could be faulty RAM. If there are two sticks, try each one by itself.

My first point of investigation would be try a new user account, it could be that her profile has basically gone ti ts up

If there is another account log into it, if you don't have another user on the PC then create one and use that for a few days see if it exhibits any of the same issues on your daughters account, if you need help in creating a new account let us know

Then get back to me and will take it from there, no point saying however many possibilities because this kind of problem is a process of elimination

Oh and regarding IE7, I find it buggy also even when my PC is in top shape, Google Chrome for me all the way!!

Hope that helps
