Hi all,

I'm trying to find the fault with our lounge lights which were installed a few years ago. Recently one stopped working and a few months later the 2nd one gave up too. At first I thought it was the light fittings themselves. I have replaced these and the problem remains. The old fittings from the lounge have also been re used elsewhere in the house and work fine.

I now suspect the dimmer switch as a possible cause. I have bought a double switch to replace the dimmer but am a bit stuck when wiring it in.

The existing dimmer has four brown wires individually patched into terminals on the dimmer. The first switch on the dimmer has wires in terminals labelled c and L1. This is the same on the 2nd dimmer. The switch I bought to replace the dimmer has terminals on each switch labelled L1 (also labelled common), L2 and L3. What goes in where on the new switch?

Thanks

Paul

The new switch is no doubt a Crabtree one.

new = old
L1 = COM

L2 = L1

L3 = L2 don't use these

Common is common.

Put the other wire in L2. If the switch works upside down, move it from L2 to L3.

Same for the other switch.

For the new switch put the common brown (old dimmer) into the L1 and L1(old dimmer) brown into L2.
Do the same for the second gang.
