Just a quick question. We have had a new window fitted into a wall. The bricks were removed to form an opening for the size of the new timber framed window. On the inside the bare brick was bonded and then tiled.

However, my question is whether the exterior of the window has been done correctly. It looks as though white silicone has been used to seal between the wooden window frame and the brickwork.

This looks odd to me. Would it not have been better the installer not have used mortar and pointed around the frame?

I have included some photos if that helps.

Thanks

Hi mattchip

thanks for the reply.

Just for clarity though: do you mean the way they have done it is "the right way" or is my suggestion of mortar / poitning "the right way"?

Thanks

i would not be at all happy with that finish, get them back and tell them to bring someone who can apply silicon properly

Hi thanks for the feedback.

aside from the sloppy looking application of the silicone, is this technique of sealing with silicone between the wooden frame and the brickwork (as opposed to pointing with mortar) normal practice?

thanks

Yes, though it should be framing silicone, and personally I'd have used brown to blend in with the wall and give a clean line to the edge of the white window.

Having said that I've used mortar for larger gaps.

That's an untidy job, in the photos.

Cheers
