Which TDC.i engine?

Good morning everybody,
In the next 2-3 weeks I will buy a 5dr focus hatchback, probably 08 reg as they are the first of the latest shape.
I don,t really want to get into a petrol/diesel debate, but I would value anybody,s opinion on which TDC,i.....1.6tdci (16 valve) or 1.8tdci(8valve)
Which is the better engine?.....which is more reliable, ?

Thanks in advance.

p.s. any slight differences in tax, insurance, mpg are not rellevant.

Reliabilty, you cant go wrong with either engine to be honest. Both very good engines.

The 1.6 tdci has pretty much the same perfomance as the 1.8, and with slightly better fuel economy.

The 1.8 has more torque though, if it was me I would go for the 1.6 TDCi every time!

dont know much about the 1.6 to be honest but the 1.8 is a pretty good unit.
They can suffer with fuel pump and injector probems which gets expensive but as long as you buy something with sensible mileage on it you should be ok

I had a Focus 1.6 TDCI on hire from north east Scotland to Goodwood and back and turned in 60 mpg with an average speed of 60. Was very impressed with performance and economy, the comfort was good to.
If I had the dosh I would buy one also road tax is very cheap.

had a number of psa 1.6 tdci engines with failed turbochargers. 1.8 8v engine is almost bulletproof.

I have been putting off having a common rail diesel because they don't seem to be as durable as the old IDI units but I recently bought a Peugot 406 with the 2.0 litre 8 valve engine and they seem to be fairly bomb proof, there are quite a number for sale with in excess of 300,000 miles on them, that was really the determining factor for me. Mine has now done 194,000 with no engine problems. I don't know that the later 16v units are as good, I know they are more difficult to work on but I would do the same as I did before I bought this one - check the forums for common faults and check the mileages of cars for sale.
