Advice on the 17th Edition Electrical test please anyone..

Hang on a minute!

At the risk of bringing dissention in the camp...

Is it five years, (as I was told while on the course), or until the 18th edition, (I heard here joking or not), or what :?:

There is no mandatory requirement to have any qualification to carry out electrical work in the UK.

There is no 'expiry date' on the 2382 qualification.

But, when the 18th does come out - the sixteenth lasted from 1991-2008 - there will be another regulations qualification (2383, possibly)

Between now and then there will be amendments, typically three or four, with the first due on the 1st July this year. It is up to you to keep up to date with any changes.

That's it. If, as Bas has suggested, your employer has a stipulation that you resit every five years, then so be it, but, as stated before, what you heard on the course was b*ll*cks.

Shouldn't be possible to resit after five years given that City & Guilds stipulate that no-one should be entered for a qualification which they already posess.

I'm going to stop posting 'thanks' hereon because this has been such a positive and useful thread for me and so very helpful I could post a thousand thanks here. So to you all

I hope it helps others too, now or in the future :)

As for my result? Well, time will soon enough tell..

Thanks guys

Its not a test like a cscs card it is a qualification so once you pass it your are qualified to 2382. But like BAS says its all about the employer requirements some might not even want you to have the qualifation some will want you to be jib qualified some might want you to have the 2392 and so on.

You'r right that it shouldn't be possible...

...but it is. ;)

Blue Monday...

Well today was the first day and how can I put it? Oooh, I know!

angry-smiley-010.gif

Interesting that the exam, on Friday, is done online and the questions are not the same for everyone; so no copy-cheating. (Not that I'm like that anyway you understand  )

There's a bank of about 600 questions they can use and a wise old 16th ed sparkie guru next to me said be careful of "is, isn't and don't". Well it was something like that.

After I quizzed him on that remark I found that what he meant was they can, and do, put a different slant on the same questions. So you have to be very careful to read exactly what they are saying, what they are asking for and how it's worded.

I also found out today yet another thing I should have been put on; the testing and inspection course or additional day's test! That's next week but I haven't been put on that one for some reason and it's meant to be important otherwise I can't sign any work I do off?

So, presumably, unless I do that test I am effectively unable to do any electrical work on my own unless someone else gives it the okay afterwards?

Other people today told me they have been on a 7 week course! So what are they doing over seven weeks which my place deems necessary or sufficient to cover in only two one-week courses?

Looks like I picked the wrong day to give up drinking...

What's the name of the course? 2391? I suspect if it is, the others doing it in 7 weeks will be doing 2 evenings/1 day a week, whereas you'll be doing a week in college? No?

If it is the 2391 I have some papers/guidance for that too if you want?

Course? I'm on a course!

Thanks mate but you caught me winding down and I probably couldn't spell my own name now even if I tried.

Best wishes

Toe knee, tow me, toad need. Ah b *******s s to it...

Luv

Eric :D

Tomorrow's another day.

I can't see it being the 2391 Inspection, testing and certification course, if it is your up sh1t street without an asbo! there are 4 practicals and a written for that and it ain't no gimme!
And I can't see you getting through what you need to know in one day, for that one
It'll be some part p carp.
Yes you must check out the wording of the questions, as they do put a slant on them, with the what is/what isn't.

Terrible Tuesday...

Well I’ve never used a highlighter pen and post-it notes so much in my life! Be warned, if you go on one of these courses you need to them, (and a calculator but they provide one of them for you). Once again, however, everyone else seemed know this except me.

We’re up to Chapter 63 now, Certification and Reporting, and Confucius he say “If they ask about the forms you are better off just looking at the form; they are a wealth of information”.

The teacher we had later today, in the afternoon, filled-in for the regular guy. He’s an old and wise veteran of the electrical world. You know the man who played Santa in 'It’s a Wonderful Life' who jumped off the bridge so James Stewart would not kill himself? Looks just like him. Anyway, I digress..

We have a couple of mock exams coming up, tomorrow I think, so that should be fun.

Actually, what I have discovered so far is that if you pick the key word in the question and look it up in the Index you get to where you need to be very quickly most times.

So I’ve stuck post-its down the side at the back to help me thumb-in on the right index page thus: -

A to Bends
Bends to Circuit
Circuit to Emerg

Etc. all the way up to

TN to Work
See, I’m not just a pretty face you know.

Wearing Wednesday...

I failed the mock today.
sad-smiley-046.gif

I got 38 right out of 60 questions, (63%). I must confess I wasn’t expecting to do so badly, but it was a good introduction to the real thing. (Multiple choice a, b, c or d).

The way I approached it was if I knew the answer I just wrote the right letter down knowing that each one like that buys me near enough two minutes. (I thought doing it like that might boost my confidence too). If I was fairly sure I did the same but with the intention of going back at the end to double check. The hard ones I left until last and I think the extra effort on them probably meant I got them all correct, but I was so burnt out after 100 minutes, and knowing it is only a mock, I submitted my paper thinking it doesn’t matter if I get a few wrong. (Big mistake).

I should have used the full two hours and treated it more seriously, which I will in the real exam on Friday of course.
speechless-smiley-004.gif
But as a result of my stupid attitude and cavalier approach at the end, it’s done the opposite and knocked my confidence.
sad-smiley-050.gif
To be fair to me I’ve had a terrible week with virtually no sleep, worrying about this and my real work, so I honestly couldn’t hack very much today.

As one guy on the course there said, “we’ve all been here for so long I’ve heard the terms so many times now I knew about 30% of it off the top of my head”. Unfortunately, like I've said, I haven’t had the same advantage.
action-smiley-008.gif

I wasn’t the only one to fail and it comforted me a little that one guy on the full seven week course got only 27 right. Well that and a new biker guy I’ve befriended there has offered me a complete set of good golf clubs for free, which I’ve been after for ages but couldn’t afford to buy. How nice is that in this crappie selfish dog-eat-dog world these days?
love-smiley-020.gif
If I pass I'm going to treat myself to nine holes at the weekend... (So tempted to say ten if he's gay :D )
