Recently received a quote, and I just happened to say "that includes VAT?" and they said no... why would you not include VAT in the quoted price...?? I just want to know the price I need to pay!

Also, they have asked for 50% upfront, 40% paid during the works, then final 10% at end... Im not really happy about paying anything up front, why should I?

We've all been told not to pay anything up front for any works.. as a company, they should pay for materials etc.. and receive payment when the job is completed.

there might be no vat because there not a vat registrerd company.im the same....i only ever ask the client to pay for the scaffold up front as if they refuse its a sure sign i wouldnt get paid at the end.
imho its not unreasonable for you to pay for the materials but what their asking seems a bit extreame.

Your builder is asking too much.
Look up staged payments.

Stage payments is the most sensible and fairest way of conducting business.

50% up front is a joke.

Withholding payments of materials until the job is complete is just as hilarious.

Aye never ever pay 50% up front. Anything up front is too much IMO. Walk away and find another builder.

I was lucky enough to only pay 2.5% up front to secure a date, then informal stage payments along the way.

Perhaps 10% up front, another 10% when initial materials are on site, then the rest in agreed stages; after fondations / floor slab, walls to plate, roof, etc.

Whatever you end up doing, 50% up front is too much.

If they are asking for that it looks like they are feeding hand to mouth and have no working capital in the business or credit anywhere

Whats to say he will wont just disappear with said 50% or do a crap job and you can only hold back 10% which he wont be bothered about and youll never see him again - find some body else
