Help with slightly odd wiring for lights

Thanks sparkwright.

I've tried wiring it red to light live, earth to earth, black and red with black tape to neutral, and it's now working correctly as it was before.

So we seem to have got there in the end - i'll see about getting a guy in to check the earth.

I wish I'd thought of that.

I gave you the answer on page one.

I didn't write "Try again" and nothing else.

I pasted your description of the wiring as it was and as it is now and pointed out that they were not the same.

You were sensible enough to note how the wiring was originally, which a lot of people don't, but then totally ignored it and tried something else including a single wire on its own in a connector - what did you think this would be the purpose of this?

It is clear from your response that you do not understand and even now when it's working you don't know why.

I might have misunderstood your posts - i'm a newbie please forgive me. As far as I can see, your posts on p1 said:

"This doesn't match your description of the original wiring."

"I am hesitant to offer you any further advice at this time.

Could we have a picture of the wiring of the switch?"

Then...

"Just to add -

If we assume (although we should never assume) that the red wire with black sleeve is, in fact, a neutral it would appear you have wired the new light to two neutrals."

I didn't spot where you told me what I should be doing. In one of your subsequent posts, you quoted some of my previous stuff and said "Try again", nothing more.

In the nicest possible way, your advice seemed to be fairly obscure and has since been limited to making slightly patronising comments about me. To be honest I just want to know what works and what doesn't. It's now working correctly and I know enough to know that this is because the wiring is correct, so i'm not going to probe much further.

One of the other guys was patient enough to help me, which I really appreciated, end of story.

Ok, fair enough. Thank you for your reply.

I just assumed (shouldn't do that should we) that if I pointed out that you had not wired the new light in the same way as the old light you would realise.

I'll try to be clearer next time.
