Hi,

Looking for some advice for my garden regarding evergreens. I have cleared a border under the front window of the house, and a border near to the lawn. I have turned over the soil and removed all (i hope ) of the weeds etc.

The borders are about 2' X 7', as I am not that good with plants etc my missus would prefer to get some evergreen sort of plants, that last all year round. Any ideas what sort of plant i should be looking at getting. Would prefer something with a bit of 'size' to it, like a smallish bush...sorry for the poor explanations

I have made an atempt! at a small diagram incase it helps.

You could look on the RHS website at www.rhs.org.uk. They have a plant selector that allows you to put in the characteristics you want and gives you a list of plants. The BBC gardening website also does a similar sort of thing. Alternatively, you could browse an online plant catalogue - www.crocus.co.uk has a section on how to choose plants and other such subjects. You can also search by characteristic on there. Most of these sites also tell you what sort of conditions they will grow in so you can check if they are suitable for your garden.

You could try Skimmia - it's got nice red berries in the winter and small white flowers in the summer. Some of the lower growing Cotoneasters are also quite similar. Be aware that the boarder near your house will probably be quite dry, so going for drought tolerant plants would be a good idea - lavender would fit the bill but it likes sun.

I suggets you create a 'framework' of some evergrren bushes and then you can fill in with more flowery stuff to give you some colour through the year.
