You can't install any remotely recent updates without WGA..

No such thing, once an XP license has been activated it dies with that machine and is not transferable, this would be the case for a "retail OEM" version

Worse case you have to tap a few numbers into the phone keypad to say you've changed the motherboard.
As I said, ms don't care about xp anymore, you used to have to speak to them if you had reached the activation limit, or the hardware had changed. Now it's all done by recorded message.
I used a customers oem xp pro from the bottom of their 5 year old laptop to install on a new pc build, activated with no problems.
I wouldn't buy one either. There are several ways of getting these things, including by torrent download. Now I'm not telling anyone to steal anything, I'm just saying that if MS no longer care about XP then why not check a site like TPB for the activation key you require?
I was under the impression that an EU directive permitted the transfer of an operating system licence from a "dead" machine to a new or rebuilt one. M$ do not make a point of publicising it, probably because it does not apply in the US. I have replaced motherboards in OEM machines which originally had VLK installs, and *the code on the machine case* (not the VLK with which the OS was installed with) has always activated correctly and "passed" WGA.
