Ive just had a new plasterboard wall fitted and its been skimmed, im going to tile it do i have to gouge it to help the tiles stick. Seems a shame. Whats the best preperation for the wall before tiling. The plaster will have been on a week this friday 16/sept/05 how long should i leave it before tiling. When answering that last question please bear in mind this job has been going on since the start of aug and the better half is getting restless

Hi
i don't want to upset you but you can tile directly onto plasterboard so you didn't need to have it skimmed. Anyway ideally you would leave the plaster 4 weeks before you tile. You don't have to score the plaster just prime it first with an acylic based primer, then tile straight on after the primer has dryed approx 15mins.

Im glad to say you havnt upset me, i am not paying for the job my insurance company is. Can you give me some more info on ( acylic based primer) cant say ive heard of it before, a brand name would be handy. These tiles are hefty brutes 17" x 12" and i would hate one to fall of, imagine the damage if it landed on the old head :( .

BAL do one called APD you should be able to get it from any Topps Tile store. How thick are your tiles because the safe weight on plaster is 20kg per square metre, that's the equivalent to a 9 mm thickness tile. The safe weight onto plasterboard is 32kg per square metre or equivalent to 12mm thickness tile.

Thanks p.pittstop, the tiles weigh 2.3kg each and there 9.26mm thick so it looks like i will be ok for the weight limit although they are a bit over the 9mm thickness. So is this APD strong stuff as i seem to have developed this paranoia about tiles falling of, dont know why as the last lost were fine. Any idea on the length of time i should give the plaster before i start tiling.
