I would like to have a stand alone RCB fitted to the shower circuit, the shower is 8.5KW, and the cable is 6mm, what rating should the RCB be, and is the work notifiable i.e. can i fit it myself legally. Many Thanks

The work is notifiable because you are modifying a shower circuit. With this in mind you would be better off seeking the services of a competant, registered electrician who will do the job safely and correctly for you.
This could also work out cheaper than you paying the notification fee depending on the existing state of your installation.

You will need the minimum of a 40amp RCBO, the 6mm cable most likely be too small , there is only one way you can install that 6mm cable and this is clipped direct,

The work would be notifiable in England and Wales yes.

You certainly can legally install it yourself. You need though to contact your local building control before you start the work and they will advise you what needs to be done, which most likely as your not an electrician will be drawings and design parameters. That though will most likely set you back a couple of hundred pounds.

Then they will come and inspect your first fixing, ie check how you ran your cable etc and say yes or no to continuing the work. After you have done the work you will of course need to test it with a calibrated test equipment, which is not something everyone as lieing around so you would most likely need to hire one.

So yes you can do it legally for say 300-400 pounds and all that entails, or get a part P scheme affiliated electrician who most likely do it cheaper, safer and less hassle.

Its an RCD, not RCB.

The RCD should be at least the rating of the CPD for the circuit in question.

Please advise the CPD value for the circuit.

If you are installing an RCD as a safety measure then you must check it with a calibtrated RCD tester. How can you tell that the RCD is working properly otherwise??

As noted above. It would be better to have a registered electrician to do this for you - mixing water, electricity and people (you/your family?) needs special care.
