Hi,

Basically I've opted an island type kitchen, but am avoiding having to pay for an island cooker hood. Especially since wall mount cooker hoods are about half the price, and so i wonder if anyone has or knows how to convert a wall range hood into an island hood?
This goes for both recirculation or ducting.

thanks

Island ones are designed to be free hanging from the ceiling, their mounting and support points are designed for that, they are angled from al sides towards the centre extraction point.

Wall mount ones are designed to be bolted to the wall and not have the whole weight of the unit hanging from the chimney (which is not normally as strong as a free hanging island type). They are also designed with a flat back instead of all round angled extraction.

Any modification or fitting not as per instructions will invalidate any warranty as well.

there must be a way to add support, to able to mount it from the ceiling.

But yeh its the back i'm mostly concerned about. Is it difficult to modify the back, adding a stainless steel cover somehow? preferably with rounded edges?

Island type ones are supported by the chimney so it is designed to take the weight and all the mounts and attachment points are there.

Wall mount ones the whole weight is taken by the wall mounting at the back. The chimney is pretty much just balanced on there with maybe a screw or two holding the cover in place.

I have been out to repair both types and without major redesign which you would have to take completely on your on head I would not recommend using the wrong type for a job. The added cost and effort to change a wall mount to a island type may negate the saving on buying one.

Ends up I suppose with how good you are or a friendly sheet metal worker is.
