Teak Oil or Teak Sealer??? Whats best

Hi all,

Right I have tried using natural teak oil and applied 3 coats of the stuff but seems to have a tacky finish and when water poared over the wood it leaves smearing were the water has run down.

I was told that teak sealer is better, but can you get a glossy/shiny finish with this stuff???

What i am trying to achieve is a glossy finish (without varnishing) that the water will bead / run straight off the wood.

This is outdoor garden furniture.

It is either tacky because you didn't leave it to dry long enough between coats or because you didn't buff it.

By buffing i mean you need to take a dry cloth after applying the oil and keep rubbing firmly for maybe 5-10 mins. This will help really work in the oil and also remove any excess.

If you want that waxy finish you could put a coat of wax over the top of your oil, but make sure it's totally dry first. I have no experience with wax on outdoor wood so can't recommend anything.

I have teak outside furniture and teak oil sucks it only lasts a few months. I find my self re-oiling every few months. The reason it is still tacky is that the coats that you put on were to heavy, need to put really light coats

I have used Varnish but this stuff chips and peels and is very hard to maintain, you need a chemical striper to take this stuff off.

There are many teak sealers on the market and I have used them all, but I found my best results with a product called Primo Teak Sealer. It penetrates into the wood and gives it protection. P.S Don't use WAX outside, any moisture that gets on the wax will leave white spots and it's very hard to remove. Trust me I know form experience.

Thanks for that, funnily enough I just purchased a tin of Starbrite Tropical Teak Sealer and it has worked a treat?

After i applied 3 coats of this stuff, that i must say go's a long way! it looks amazing.

I even poared water all over it and left it, did not leave a single mark like the normal oil does and it is a hell of a lot easier to apply.

Teak oil go's on really nice and looks grate for the first few weeks, but then it starts to fade.

Teak oil wont last. If your furniture is outside in direct sunlight and exposed to moisture it will only last a few months. Then you will have to do the application again.

You could use a top coat of Primo Epoxy Topcoat or Sickkens right over the oil, to give it protection. If not, you will become an expert in sanding and applying teak oil like my self.
