Is it possible to fill plasterboard joints?

Hi,

Virtually all the upstairs rooms in my house have got small cracks in the ceiling where the sections of plasterboard meet - so effectively you can see the outline of where each piece of plasterboard was fixed to the joists.

Is it possible to fill these cracks and repaint, and if so what is the best product(s) to use? Or is it a case of taping the joints and re-skimming?

use a decent flexible decorators caulking. fill the joint with it then smooth it over with a wet finger. dont get a tube of the crap from the diy sheds go to a decorators merchants such as johnstones etc to get a decent trade one

The caulk is always worth a try...certainly better than powder filler anyway, but if you continue to have problems you will need to think about lining the ceilings.

Oh..just remembered, there is a flexible emulsion pint on the market, but the last time i used something similar it was very thick and left a heavy texture.

Give the caulk a shot, sont over fill it though.......you cant rub it down, be prepared to fill it twice in deeper gaps, it shrinks a fair bit.

I have the same problem. I had thought of removing the plaster either side of the crack, approx 100mm, covering the joint with some scrim and then plastering over and feathering it in with the rest of the ceiling. Bit of sanding after and it should come up a treat.

That'll work. It's about the only permanent solution.

if youre going to do that id use gypfill rather than plaster, youll get a much smoother finish, and feather it in better

Id go for paper tape as opposed to scrim.....its reasier to cover and get smooth

rake out all the joints(make a v joint) and prime with a water based primer once dry fill with a good brand name filler not caulk this will split again. when filler is dry give the whole ceiling 2 good coats of quality emulsion ....job done

That'll work. It's about the only permanent solution.

On problem joints i just rake and fill then use Self adhesive scrim and a plasterboard joint filler. I use Lefarge dry lining joint filler, not had one fail yet exept when I was out of filler and used polyskim

a very slight hump is left but it sort of lends it self to the rest of undulations you find on most ceilings nowadays.

Though if all the joints are showing I do as above and paper. Got me loads of more work they think sun shines out me arse
