Capitalism

Firstly a blind man could see that the whole ROI tiger economy was built on sand

Bertie Ahern didn't see it coming nor his cabinet it would seem. Clever people don't you think or maybe not?
Cowan was like his uk counterpart Brown, completely blind to the forth coming credit crunch.
.
Never mind - it`s not as bad as the Potato Famine was

The 'stupid electorate' were the ones who voted in Thatcher in the first place, not the spawn of Thatcher... ;)
  Why were they stupid - the poor ones were offered houses @ half market value - the Barrow Boys were let loose in the money markets instead of the local veg markets - and the Patriotic few were given a war ( Malvinas ) Totally blinding politics

Thatcherism led to the obsession with house buying in this country and I blame her personally for all the property shows on tv

Why spend so much time typing when you could have just said 'We're f*cked'

Joe (or his protégé) would have done so... ;)

to try and make you undrestand and then you might shut up....

Any bank will go under if too many people try to take their money out at once. It's an inherent weakness in the whole concept of a bank. I'm no economist either but it occurs to me that, if you have sufficient clout, you could put a bank out of business just by spreading rumours.
Didn't george Soros have that effect on the British economy with Black Thursday?
Played the money markets with his billions, earned a bigger fortune in the process whilst forcing the Government to take emergency action.

Further from my comments above, customers taking the bank down, by removing all their money; isn't it the investment parts of the bank, not the customer version so much, excluding mis-sold insurance, and mortgages; ie people listed above, Nick Leeson? was it, taking Barings bank down famously, the Swiss bank UBS recently taking a hit for $2 billion or something? And the US bank knowingly selling bad loans, and then insider trading, that they will go bad?

I've worked in banks, as a service provider. Bank staff are friendly and nice. Most of them. Investment bankers, the back room boys, with the Ferraris, and massive egos, are just rude and full of themselves, and often broke their computers on purpose, to see me crawling round the floor to fix them, while making crude jokes, and being generally offensive.

Have a wealthy neighbour who went to his bank to withdraw a large amount as it was rumoured they might go t*ts up.
Bank of course could not pay him so they signed the bank over to him instead and the bank now rents the property.
Reminds me of a similar story.

A new manager starts at a bank in a small Scottish town. He decides to look though the loan book (This was in the days when a manager, not a computer made the decision) and found that one local landowner had a very large loan outstanding, which was not being paid off. So he called the person in and insisted he cleared the loan.

Some time later the regional manager visited the branch and asked how things were going. The branch manager told the RM that the large loan had been repaired. The RM was livid. "You idiot," he said, " the interest he paid on that loan was paying all your salaries."

Like I said - Barrow Boys - the true spawn of Thatcher

Spawn..... do you understand the meaning of the word....

Surely you mean GREAT. And I bet you will take the day off when she has a state funeral....

It is, after all, what she deserves...
