central heating ok, no hot water in tank though...

dear all,
would appreciate some help with the following.
we have a very old concord WRS wall mounted boiler in our garage. for a while now a gated valve above the boiler has been leaking and this was corroding the casing so yesterday i finally got round to replacing it.
the valve was down stream of the electric pump (next to the boiler) which drives the CH.

i slacked off the existing valve, drained the system, replaced valve, fired up the old girl and bled the rads. all seemed well as CH worked fine on testing.

this morning however, no hot water in the storage tank, which is upstairs.
hot taps are running (cold water though), no coughing or spluttering to suggest air. boiler is working and getting hot as expected. storage tank feels cold but sounds like its filling from somewhere.

i assume the pipe i worked on is not the supply to the storage tank the pipe i worked on as;
a) there as 3 other pipe leaving/entering the boiler
b)the storage tank doesn't depend on the CH pump.

i can only guess that air has gone back into the boiler itself?
any advice on how to remedy this would be much appreciated.

bleed the pipework at the cylinder, if you dont have bleed points at the cylinder call your local plumber!!

pardon my ignorance, is cylinder the same as storage tank?
couldn't see any bleed points upstairs,

yes the storage tank is the cylinder!
on the lower section there should be two pipes going in and out, the top one of these should have a bleed point if not then it is best to call in a plumber to vent it!!

just out of interest how would a plumber vent it?

now by this answer i'm doing a plumber out of work! but the most common way is to crack a joint under control untill all the air is removed,
you can forgive me if you understand i cannot give detailed info to this!!

I don`t mind doing Gas Fitters out of work

And this job you have doesn`t require a Gas Safe bod . First thing to do is look in the loft - if you have 2 storage cisterns , look @ the small one and you`ll probably find the ballvalve has stuck stopping the system filling

. You should have the boiler serviced regularly by a Gas Safe person anyway.

If you have 4 pipes running from the boiler, I assume you've pumped CH/gravity HW. (Are the 2 HW pipes slightly bigger than the CH pipes, one of which has the pump fitted into it?)

Do you have 2 pipes going into the cylinder, 1 above the other? Top pipe should then have another pipe coming from the joint where it turns to enter the cylinder, going up and over the small Feed and Expansion cistern. Not uncommon for these gravity primaries to block with sludge. (How dirty was the water in the system when you drained it?)

British Gas are making a far better job of destroying independent - gas fitters, plumbers, domestic appliance repairers,drain clearers than I ever could . Have you got shares in BG

well , as the boiler`s in the garage - a bit of mess from a hose won`t hurt - so back fill the system from a cold mains tap to a central heating draincock

Boiler stone cold and turned off controls when you do it - cast iron doesn`t like thermal shock . Also have someone in the roof monitoring the feed cistern - you don`t want water overspilling there if the overflow pipe can`t cope . If you do this @ the weekend you`ll save a BG fitter from having to work overtime
