Putin is on the way back into power and tightening the party grip on the security forces. Russia is modernising its military and more recently started to cold war probing of our defences and response rates.

There is going to be the issue of gas supplies to Europe from Russia, and the joining of NATO by several ex-USSR states - non of which Russia is happy about. And our relations with Russia are at a very low point

Then there is Iran

Whilst the UK is in no-way the power it used to be, we go still have considerable financial, business and economic influence which is worth attacking and does need protecting

No [rational] country invests in nuclear weapons to use, but rather to deter

Iran has a defence treaty with China - attack Iran and you attack China.

Besides, Israel will nuke Iran before they get proper weapons.

Trident is a white elephant.

Only a handful of countries are in the nuclear club - which makes them a less safe place to live because we have missiles pointing at us.
Since when did a Mexican stand-off become a safe way to live?

maybe we should Nationalise British Gas and show Russia we have a modicum of Socialism left :LOL: Then we`ll have a chance to keep the gas flowing , eh Comrades ? Never mind looking after our world - let`s get Mr. Therm back and he can easily become Comrade Thermski . We can stop buying French Nuclear generated power - open up the mines and Kevplumb will become a National icon - well, his back will anyway :idea:
 
If we knew with total certainty where the next threat would come from then we could gear up for that threat.... But we don't. Ditching the nuclear arsenal now only to discover that we need it later on would be foolhardy in the extreme.... If we never use it, then all we have done is spend some cash and some could argue that it has done it's job. Britain on its own has enough fire power to destroy the planet so I think that it is punching above its weight..... Only a fool would try to swat a hornet with his bare hand. Joe seems to think that Britain is a third rate bunch of losers worth nothing but in reality it still has a great deal of influence and is a credible world power. There are those who think that we are all off to hell in a hand cart and heading towards a fate like Greece... I think not... Hard times? Yes but in a state of reorganisation.... Give up and throw in the towel? Christ No!. Britain has a long history of surviving hard times, some times more by luck than judgment but the British have always dug their heels in and endured. Britain lives in uncertain times and so needs to hold on to an ability to defend itself and its interests against any threat and not be pushed around by the big guys...
 
It's a mathematical certainty that the UK will default on its debts - just like Greece. Greece's outlook is actually better than the UK. They have a smaller population and smaller infrastructure, and they are a holiday destination. Tourists will always add to the Greek economy. Their future is quite bright.

As for the UK? Full of immigrants, no exports, welfare out of control, massive public and personal debt. we can't even stop the borrowing - never mind pay it back. Only cheap oil can save our economy - but those days have gone.

We will never buy Trident - we will be bankrupt first.

But you keep telling us that most countries are on the precipice of financial meltdown - so pray tell, where will all these foreign tourists with loads of disposable income come from?
 
If it gets that bad - we all starve. Doesn't matter where you are.
 
So, Joe, you have been telling all and sundry for a while now that we are going to end up like Greece... yet in this thread you tell us that Greece "has quite a bright future"... So if we end up like Greece we end up with a bright future too...? So surely it's not a bad thing if we end up like the Greeks as oppose to the doom tide that you predicted so many times?
Oh, but I do agree with your anti-trident stance. If some loony is going to launch a nuclear attack then they will do it regardless of what deterrent a country has. Just like you will always find some small bloke that's willing to pick a fight with the biggest bloke they can find. Having any number of nukes won't matter when the world has been destroyed beyond survival.

Joe you are totally wrong.

The UK debts are very very long term, unlike Greece and Spain and other countries, thats why the needed bailing out and thats the reason them countries have all been downgraded....we have not been downgraded due to debt.

We are lucky enough not have the Euro which is keeping us in the position we are in.

The future if Greece is not bright at all, they have just agreed another bail out, they have masive debts and they cannot borrow....we have debts and we CAN borrow. Comparing Greece with the UK is laughable!
 
A couple of observations ...

1. The big difference between the UK and Greece is that in the UK the majority of income earners pay income tax whilst in Greece the majority avoid it ... This does make any recover plan somewhat precarious.

2. Curious all the posts about not needing any form of deterrent because we are part of NATO ... What does everyone think NATO is a book club? Our contribution to NATO is our own deterrent plus our willingness to allow others to site their WoMD on our territories and dominions.

Do as Joe suggests, a white flag costs so much less :LOL:
