Painting over wall coating

I have a wall coating (Sprayed on type) around 15 year old that is starting to flake and peel in certain areas where the wind hits the property the hardest.
I am going to paint over the coating but firstly remove all the flaking and peeling bits.
Various people I speak to say I need to seal the wall first before painting with a good sealer I presume to help stop further peeling and stop water getting behind the wall coating.

Can anyone recommend a good product for this application and does this advice sound right? Looking for the right steps to take.

If its just the paint coming off and the substrate is sound/ not dusty after scraping/ brushing off then no sealer should be needed. Just two coats of weathershield/stormshield / sandtex. If it is dusty after preparation then a coat of Stabilising solution should make a sound base for your paint.. But please dont put stabiliser onto sound paint/base as this will give the effect of painting on glass and paint will peel off within 2 yrs.

.....er.........have you not considered having the wall coating re done? After all, its lasted 15 years, it night be a goo idea to get it done again, for the next 15 years! OK, i'm in the trade so i'm biased (!) but.............

Wall coatings are a SEAMLESS system and therefore if you are hell bent on painting it, really you need to get the whole lot off, which usually involves either a good strong powerwasher with a needle jet, or a pneumatic needle gun, from a hire shop.

perhaps he's already sorted by now, probably dissapointed in spending £K'ssss and seeing it peel, same result with weathershield but cost lots less?

i think thats a but unfair. The OP states the coating is 15 years old. Thats the typical lifespan, as opposed to paint which is about 2 years!
