Holidays in Greece

Once the Greeks tell the EU where to stuff it's euro and tell the banks they can whistle for their money, they'll go back to the drachma - which will be devalued in relation to the euro, the pound, and the dollar. They'll also be free of the straitjacket of EU red tape and legislation - which have piled cost after cost onto small, family run businesses not just in Greece but right across Europe

The effect will be to make holidays in Greece much cheaper (the way they used to be before the euro!), it'll make Greek agricultural products such as olive oils and feta cheese much cheaper when sold abroad, and it'll mean that Greek people will tend to buy domestically produced products and support Greek jobs (because imported goods from abroad will be relatively more expensive).

Nearly 50% of Greeks work in the tourist and shipping industries, another 22% in agriculture. So if they tell the EU to get stuffed the Greeks will see a big increase in the profitability of the sectors of their economy which employ nearly 3/4 of their population - plus, their domestic industries will get a boost from an economic incentive to "buy Greek".

If you're Greek, what's not to like about that!!!!

Not sure if that will happen ..... and if its good for the Greek people I hope it does....I find it annoying on here that people lump a whole race as one and are very derogatory.

The people of Kefalonia suffered a huge earthquake in 1953 and many were killed, they have shown great resilience and fortitude in rebuilding the island after it was virtually totally devastated. They deserve some credit.

The Greeks have had a lot of investment from the rest of the EU, with little payback in return, which is at the expense of Brits in particular who pay a massive contribution to the EU, not only in terms of financial but also the demise of many of our traditional skills and industries such as farming, engineering, fisheries etc and the subsequent job losses due to EU policies that are anti-British but have had little impact on the likes of Greece.

Now they want to do a runner. Its unethical.

Thank you for that Lou.....I am aware that I do not understand it all.
I suppose I just think of the nice, ordinary, people who we met there who probably have about as much knowledge of the politics of it all as I do

I got a little bored, and i've been busy, with this thread so I haven't followed it.

But, for all their (the Greeks) problems, the anti Health & safety brigade should be watching Joanna Lumley in Athens. To celebrate the end of the farmers season, they have a bonfire and the local (young) boys leap through it!

Thats never going to happen here :D

Susie I appreciate your point of view and consideration for others. I just have a different personel view of the Greek situation - but it does not make me right and you wrong, or vice versa, its just MY opinion of the situation.

One of the most accurate and informed posts I've seen on here for quite a while.

Having quite a few Greek friends I really hope they do come out of the Euro as it's caused them nothing but hardship since the day they joined ... Let's hope we NEVER allow our personal glory chasing politicians to lead us into this total waste of good breathing air.

It appears the Greeks may have realised the errors of its ways after MPs had a vote of confidence in the PM.

I will monitor the situation before deciding whether to holiday there or not.
