Hello!

Right, I'm currently planning on building a mini bar in my spare room, and have come across a snag.

I was planning on getting a nice piece of wood (50mmx375mm) and making the bar top out of it, however I've come to realize that this isn't a standard size.

So, my question is, how difficult is it going to be for me to get hold of this, and is it going to cost me an arm and a leg.

Sorry if this is a basic question but i'm new to buying wood, normally make do with odds and ends from old wardrobes and whatnot!

Also, if anybody thinks I'm going the complete wrong way about this, and has another suggestion, please put it forward, i'm open to any advice that you guys have got

Thanks very much in advance

Why on earth would you want a mini bar in your spare room? (spare bedroom?)

Are you going back to the 70's?

Sorry spare living room/dining room, I just call it a spare room because theres nothing in there at the minute

you buy planed timber in increments off inches as in 2x2" 3x2" 4x2" 5x2"planed

these come out at 44x44mm-69mm-95mm or 119 you work out what combination off widths will give you what you want or slightly more
you then alternate the boards grain curve up then down then up ect
so 375mm will be 95x4=380
then glue them together

you can also use ready glued together timber where the staves [planks] are around 2" wide and 18mm thick
http://www.wickes.co.uk/timberboard/invt/115440/
and glue 2 back to back and give you 36mm
or edge with timber to give the look off thickness

another though is old or new scaffold boards they are 9"[225]x 1x 1/2" [38mm] and around 50-90p a foot recycled or 100-150p new

Why not contact some timber yards they often have off cuts, some quite big.

My friend built a bar in his garage and he used a couple of damaged railway sleepers, if you get them with squared off edges they work a treat.

Looks really rustic too. He had to thin them though, but they did that at the yard for him. Only cost him about £20!

Sorry I know you have plenty of answers - I will shut up now

no please dont the more the merrier :D :D

Get some old Victorian floor joists and fasten them together - then sand them with a belt sander and finally use antique wax for a finish. You'll love it. Just leave all the nail holes in.
