Metal thefts

Seems all the rage at the moment. They were stealing council cast iron road gulley lids round my way a while back.
A sign of the times I guess. :(

A neighbour had his ole tractor stolen and the thieves had the gall to drive it into the scrapyard for breaking. Another neighbour spotted it and he got it back luckily.

I heard some rumour that scrapyards may have to install ANPR cameras to record all vehicles entering and leaving their premises, but I cannot see that working / deterring.

I can't see this crookery ever being beaten. I'd thus urge anyone with any memorial plaques, either public or private, to remove and replace the plaques with an alternative (engraved plastic may not be fantastic, but it's cheap and easily replacable, and the image of the original can be stored on a computer whilts the metal plaque can be stored as a family or local heirloom) :(

More and more companies are using Smartwater on their equipment now. There was something on TV recently about it.

I can't see it working either, it's not just the thieves that are crooked but any scrapyard that takes things like plaques, drain covers, beer barrels and railway cabling must fall into the dodgy area

What happens to the crooks who nick the stuff or the recyclers who are caught with it? I suspect not enough to deter this big and lucrative trade

No-one is going to be able to stop the stuff being nicked in the first place, so the only way has to be tackling this at the scrap yards.

If a lorry driver is presumed guilty if an unbeknown stowaway is found on his truck, then perhaps a scrap yard boss can be deemed guilty if stolen stuff is processed by him ... despite the so called ID checks which they say they make

Seems there have been a few in the past sufferred burns for stealing from electric sub stations.

How can anyone be stupid enough to steal from sub stations where electricity is being produced / stored is beyond me!

Local BG installation guy had his van turned over, they nicked all his pipe and fittings and left the power tools!

Don`t tell everyone - they`ll be after the lead from the batteries

hmm, shame that plastic electric cable don't work on the trains!!! ;) ;) ;)

High time the scrap merchants tightened their own methods though. Perhaps something as simple as insisting on a photocard drivers licence off everyone who takes scrap metal in. Our local scrap merchants here in Derby say that no scrap will be taken from anyone arriving by foot, so to take scrap there means taking it in a vehicle. How many drivers turn up without their driving licence? Probably quite a few (I know I have). But if they enforced such a policy as showing your driving licence before accepting scrap, then I'm sure there would be far more traceability. ;) ;) ;)
