at the moment there is an outside power supply to the garage and light, this is supplied via swa cable. now the swa is attached to the ouside of the house connected into a sealed junction box ip rated. can i change this to an outside socket but still keep the power to the garage and light etc.

That will count as notifiable work, so you'll need to be telling the local authority before you start work.

That outside box, where is that fed from? is there an FCU inside the house?

yes it is coming from a fuse spur from the living room?

So, the total load on the circuit will be 13amps.

The outside box can be changed for a socket provided that:

1. the work is notified to the local authority before work starts (and you pay a fee) or you get a registered electrician to do the work

and

2. the circuit that the outside socket is fed from is protected by a 30mA RCD (or an RCD socket is fitted).

yes junction box already rcd protected at ccu. understand that it needs to be notified. so the junction box that is supplying the garage and outside light, was to be changed to a double socket, as i understand it, this will keep the supply to to the garage aswell.... just like a ring circuit would perform
The outside socket will be used to power the pond.

doh, my mistake, relised after i had pressed the enter button..... thank you.
