Hi all,

I've recently (two months back) had some oak skirting delivered from a timber merchants, I've only just got round to fitting it due to health issues, and found out that one of the 4 meter lengths is just plain ugly. It's got no clear grain pattern, and has loads of really dark almost black smudges running down most of the middle section.

In short, it's in my opinion unusable. Am I likely to get very far getting on the phone to the place I bought it, or at they likely to tell me that, "It's a natural product, you get what you get"?

Thanks all,

Russ

You could always ask/beg, but common sense to check on delivery and much better still to purchase at yard to ensure you get what you want.

have you got a picture so we can we determine what it looks like
what exactly was it sold to you as ??
as in dark oak /oak effect /stains like dark oak ect

I'm afraid that I'm with foxhole on this one. Most delivery notes from trade suppliers clearly state that goods must be checked on receipt and returns are only accepted within a very short time scale. You might be able to persuade them that they should replace it FOC at this stage as a matter of goodwill, though.

When I order in hardwood mouldings from a yard I expect to get a certain percentage of wastage caused by splits, shakes, knots, run-outs, etc as well as by horrible grain pattern. After all wood is a natural product and a skilled joiner will endeavour to cut out the defects and use the timber intellegently. Many yards won't normally allow an individual to pick through every board to get the best, partly on health and safety grounds and partly because trade buyers, who tend to buy unseen, aren't going to be too happy if they end up with a rag bag of defective boards (the rejects after you've had the best boards). Where I do end up with a naff board and I really have to use it I try to put it where it is less noticeable, e.g. shorter sections in dimly lit and low traffic areas where hopefully the decorators can tone it in as well to disguise the truth

Depends what you asked for / what was advertised.

If all that you asked for was oak skirting, well it's oak innit!

Hi all,

A quick update - I contacted the company involved, and it's now all sorted. I was able to pick out offcuts that were perfect for what I need (it's a small box room nursery-to-be), I had to pay a tenner for the delivery, and at the same time they picked up and refunded me for the piece that I didn't want.

The company in question is Savoy Timber, their Preston branch, pretty happy with how things turned out, so many thanks!
