I'm no builder but can generally put my hands to anything and am planning to build a detached garage. Been scouring the net for my little problem but no joy.
I want to build my garage as close to next doors garage wall as possible. So can some one explain the method of digging footings in say 1m stretches at a time and filling with concrete so as not to risk disturbing next doors garage wall foundations. This method I've seen advised but am open to any other ideas. So my question is really, how can I get my footings dug as close as possible to next doors garage without causing their garage to fall down :D
Feel free to state the bleeping obvious as I'm no builder :D :D :D

Thanx
Chris

When I did my small extension on the side and right up to my neighbour boundary, my BCO suggested a 1m section with with metal rods, I bang the approx 800mm metal rods in the mud on the edge until 400mm of the footing and when ready for the next section carefully dig out the next 1m section, a bit awkward with the rods in the way but not impossible

Thanks for the reply. That sounds exactly what I've read on other forums so far. But without sounding too dumb :D Can you explain what you did a bit more. Like which edge are you referring to of the footings. And I cant quite grasp what the rods are doing if they are vertical. I thought they would be horizontal to tie in each section that is filled with concrete.

Thanks
Chris

Done a rough drawing, this was suggested by my BCO, as a bonus I could've added another bar in the middle section wired together but I didn't have to, give a shout if you're not sure, double click on picture

Thanks. Got the idea now. But to me its still not strengthening each section you dig out and fill with concrete to the next section. But I'm no builder :D so I'll take this as the method recommended.
Where did you get the rods/bars and how long are they?

Thanks

It's stronger than you think it is as the rebar is connecting the sections of footing and don't think there's much choice.
so I'll take this as the method recommended.
Check with your BCO for their recommendation in your area as may differ because of clay conditions

I think I've bought it from Jewsons or Travis Perkins builder merchants

Thanks for the replies. Its a real help. So to clarify. Dig out the trench for 1m, bang in the rods. fill with concrete and repeat. Yes? :D

That's what I did and I think it was approximately 1.3m trench for the 4m footing side extension with 150mm gap to my neighbour wall although they gave me permission to tie into their wall to give me more room internal which was okay by BCO to do this but I didn't want any comeback on any damp issues in the future so left a gap of 150mm, have a chat with BCO as you maybe able to have a longer trench depending structure of the neighbour property
