hiya lads, newbie here from sunny brum.first question is i,ve just had the front of my garage wall rebuilt and the sides and rear heightened making it 23ft long x 2oft wide.with a height of approx 9ft.what concerns me is the wall is only single skin with a few pillars spaced out.is this safe?second question is whats the best way to roof a 23x20ft sloping garage?i,m thinking of using corrugated steel.but how do i lay the joists out?do i need a rsj to support the joist.and is a rsj safe sitting on a single skin wall?any help much appreciated in advance.cheers

Firstly, paragraph and punctuate, or you will give us a bad name

The wall should be OK, but it depends on how it was built and if it is designed to get support from the roof or not

Is building control involved?

As for the roof, there are many options, but 6m is a bit beyond any practically sized timber joists/rafters, so you may need some steel beams somewhere

thanks for the reply woody.building control is not involved with this project has the garage is situated in the rear of my garden i did,nt see the need.the builder has left a 4"fall from the rear to the front.i,m thinking maybe a 6x4 or slightly smaller rsj situated approx 12ft from the rear of the garage across the full width(20ft)with the joists running down from rear to front straight across the rsj.what size joists do you think i,ll get away with.and does it matter what way you run the joists.cheers

I thought garages over 30m² required building regs' regardless of their location as well as pp.

Yours is a snadge above 42m².

 not sure mate.to be honest,i,ve only been in the property for 2 months.the garage was already there, but the front wall was mainly built up of timber with a 3ft dwarf wall which i knocked down and had rebuilt with brick.so in theory all i,ve done is renovate it.
