Problems with Marley Eternit Monarch Tiles

I also have this "coating failure" with my Marley Eternit Marquess roof tile (only 7 years old). I contacted Marley in August to report that the slate grey coating was flaking off the concrete tile. They sent out Paul Newman, who just gathered photographic evidence. Where I live there are 4 houses effected by the same problem. He took pictures of just 2. He never looked closely or even got on a ladder to inspect the porches. I have now had my letter in response to his findings. They wrote "The Marquess tiles are showing signs of weathering. Which is within the parameters of the requirements set out for the product. They finished the letter off with "Your enquiry will now be closed". I expect they just want me to climb back under my stoned and forget about it! Clearly there is a massive problem with 2 makes of Marley Eternit roof tiles. The Marquess & Monarch.

If any body has any information on how to fight this with Marley Eternit I would be soooooo appreciative. Kindest regards Vicky

Hi Vicky,

I am the coordinator for the 'Marley Legal Group' that is a group of people with similar coating failures on their Marley Monarch and Marquess roofs.

If you wish to join this group that is currently seeking legal advice through appointed solicitors with offices in Scotland and England, please e-mail [email protected] and request a Questionnaire and prepare three photographs of your roof.

I look forward to your request. Best wishes, Douglas Locke

Hi everyone,

Glad I'm not alone on this one!
I also have a five year old Marquess tiled roof which is now showing severe discolouration.
Also, during yesterdays storm a tile was dislodged and broken.
Where do I go now ? Marley say they have discontinued this tile and my internet search this evening has failed to find even a couple.
I am more than happy to be included in any pressure group trying to get a favourable response from Marley.
In the meantime, I would be extremely gratefull if anybody can help me find a replacement for my damaged tile. [email protected]

Hi all,

I also just lost a few in this weeks Scottish storms and, of course, I'm unable to find a replacement.......any suggestions?

The nice man at Marley suggested I simply re-tile the affected slope......I'm waiting on his confirmation that Marley are happy to pay for the re-tiling....

Cheers
Gerry

What Marley tiles/slates and colour are the ones you are looking to replace?
As far as I am aware from a builder who contacted me Marley have masses of both the Monarch and Marquess ranges but will not sell them as there has been a coating failure on both models. They have received hundreds of complaints regarding the recoating of the tiles/slates on people's roofs but after initially accepting there was a problem and recoating a lot of roofs, now they are saying that 'natural weathering' is the cause! Not so Marley... Do you have a problem of discolourisation, the tiles/slates going white and obvious signs that the grey or red coating is coming off on your roof?

Sorry, Should have said......

I have a 12yr old Monarch roof. I understand that Marquess may be of similar profile but with smooth finish.....I don't mind the finish as long as its watertight !

I have some natural weathering, but none of the "fade to white" problem that some others are having....Guess its because my roof is older, before they changed the formula.

I'm in a conservation area, this tile was forced on my by planning. Builder advised against at the time as it was such a flimsy tile.....A number of my near neighbours have the same tile, (and the same supply issues).

Very interesting to note that your 12 year old Marley Monarch tiles have no fade to white - as you say Marley must have changed the formula of the coating and that was confirmed to me by Marley's previous site manager who said just that and that was the cause of the coating failure but Marley are denying it now.
Would you be very kind and send me some photos of your tiles as it would help us in our cause to show that the later batches of Monarch tiles have an inferior coating to yours. It would also be interesting to see what 'natural weathering' is like on your tiles compared to the tiles on other houses in the group after only a few years on a roof? I am the coordinator of the Marley Legal Group and can be contacted at [email protected].
Have you tried to see if Marley Contract Services in Bishopbriggs have any of these tiles left. I have also been told by another person that Marley have offered four houses replacement tiles for their roof at £5 a tile + VAT? So it would appear that Marley definitely do have these tiles stored away somewhere. There is also a farmer in the North East of Scotland who has half a pallet of these tiles but unfortunately he wont sell them!

We have lived in our house, which is terraced, combining 6 flats and 4 houses, for 10 years. While we have not had a problem with them ourselves, a neighbouring flat had somebody out to repair the roof for them today and he knocked the door to tell us the tile had been discontinued and he couldn't find them anywhere to replace them. He advised us, if we could find any to get some in just in case we have any problems in the future, because obviously the longer the tile is discontinued, the harder it will be to find them. I'm glad I found this forum first! If any photos of our roof will help you guys, I'm happy to oblige! Properties here are approximately 22-25 years old, all have Marley monarch tiles.

Thank you for your interest and suggestion, however we have already considered this as a cause but it is not actually the cause in our cases - the problem is that the grey and red coatings have been failing on the Marley Monarch and Marquess slates/tiles. Marley's own site manager who inspected ours and others slates told us that the coating formula had been changed and since then hundreds of roofs have had the same coating failures. The earlier laid slates shown above were not affected but the replacement ones of a much later manufacture were. Initially Marley have been recoating roofs affected on the earlier complaints, however now they say this is just 'natural weathering' - not so. Do you know of any replacement Monarch or Marquess slates that are available anywhere as none seem to be available?

other option would be to have your roof painted to get rid of the unsightly apperance if your tiles are dis continued u could try a roof mercent like proos i know the stalked some ranges of dis continued tiles or some second hand slate merchents will also stock second hand tiles like direct slate or hendersons these places are all in glasgow

I have had similar problems with Marley Mendip tiles The coating came off the tiles within 2 years Marley accepted they were faulty and the tiles were replaced The new tiles were obviously from the same batch and are now in a worse condition than the original batch I have had a visit from Mr Wallis and the usual letters from Marley refusing to take further action
