I had a problem with my boiler a couple of weeks ago ( //www.diynot.com/forums/plumbing/no-pilot-light.301854/#2204289 )

Got a plumber mate to come and look at it and it turned out to be the PCB - got it replaced and the boiler worked for a while.. This week it packed in again, but in a new way!

I switch the boiler on now using the knob at the bottom (0-6) and the boiler immediately tries to fire up, whether or not it is switched on at the timer. The fan comes on, the pilot light lights and stays lit, but the burner won't come on. All I get is a loud clicking noise coming from the electrode which repeats every second or so.

Ideally I'd get my mate round to look at it again, but he is on holidays for a couple of weeks.

 Could be 2 faults here with no timer on boiler firing indicates zone valve micro switch stuck. pilot lit but no burner ? does the pilot keep relighting and dropping out or stay lit but still clicking ?

Is the zone valve the same thing as the mid positioning valve? Cos if so, that is knackered. My mate said that, but he said all it meant was that I couldn't switch between central heating and heating the water - I'd have to have both on at the same time.
