Hi - if anyone has any thought on this it would be appreciated! A water company has just replaced the pipe in our road to increase the pressure to the houses. They were using a digger right up to our front gate - the digger has managed to crack the concrete front step and gate post! Whilst this work was going on a water leak appeared approx 3 feet inside the front gate, the pressure of which means the water is coming out of the wall about a foot off the ground.

To me it seems obvious this has been caused by the work done. However, when the foreman came to see it he insists it's coincidence and our old lead pipe must have spontaneously ruptured. He says that because the leak has appeared so far within our gate, it can't have been caused by their work.

I would have thought that any work violent enough to crack our concrete step and gate post could easily have broken a pipe in the property and/or that water could being 'pushed' in and even though the crack might be nearer the gate.

Please - any thoughts??

Ask for the name of the representative from the Water Authority's man on site, and speak to him. Not only have the contractors damaged your property, they've also caused this leak. (Lead pipe, its been there for a good few years and suddenly springs a leak at the same time as works outside damage your property????? )

Contractor will have insurance to cover any damage caused, and if they're already replacing pipes then laying you a new service wont be too difficult. (Hopefully.....)

just because the leak appears inside the boundary (ie on your land) doesnt mean the leak is occurring is under there.

lead pipe is very flexible, highly unlikely it has split due to vibration. AFAIK most water companies will repair leaks on 'private' supply pipes free of charge as a good will gesture on a 'one off' basis. (they do in my area anyway)

Possibly pulled the lead pipe with the digger and it broke a few feet away.

Interesting thought about the digger pulling the pipe - I'll put that one to them. Trouble is, although it seems obvious to everyone it must have been them, if they turn round and say 'prove it' (as they're basically doing) it's impossible to do. And this seems a company who doesn't really do Good Will. I will see what 'the boss' says next week. But at least that's one theory to throw at them - thanks and glad others also think they're taking the pee!

Won't know til (if) the water board come and fix it - will let you know![/u]
