I've just finished (??!!) renovating about 50m2 of pine floorboards - sanded back then applyed 2 coats of Osmo wax oil. It looks great but having walked on it barefoot for the first time yesterday, it was obvious (from the shards of wood left in my feet) that the floor still has a lot of splintering.

Has anyone got any advice on what I can do about it. I really don't want to have to start sanding again if possible. Would applying a good Matt varnish/poly stop the splintering?

Any help very much appreciated.

Thanks

Don't think you're going to be able to apply a varnish over an oil finish.

My floors desperately need re-sanding. But I only ever did them with a hand sander about eighteen years ago! One or two patches are starting to splinter. This is happening where the varnish has worn away, so I'm guessing the varnish does 'bond' the fibres together.

Break out the dust mask!

Thanks Janitor.... so applying some kind of varnish looks like it would prevent the splintering but you say that you can't apply varnish ontop of the wax oil...

If anyone has any ideas on how this might work or of any products/techniques which overcome this I would be very grateful.

Thanks

Guy

Your best bet may be to do a small test patch in an inconspicuous area? Maybe trying a water based and and oil based varnish over the existing finish, you may get lucky and find you can apply over the top, which would be a cracking result and you'll owe me copious amounts of virtual beer!
