Is it possible that a neighbour could tap into my phone line on the BT side of my master socket (ie where the cable runs along the outside of the house) and use it for thier own internet landline connection. would this be spotted somehow by BT or my broadband supplier. or could this neighbour be enjoying his internet connection F.O.C courtesy of me paying MY bill.

This isnt actually me by the way, its a relative of the wifes, who isnt exactly well up on this sort of info, and suspects that the above scenario is the case.

No, you can only have one router in sync on a phone line ,if however you have a open wireless connection on your router they could use this.

someone could joint into the cable in this way. it may not be noticed by BT until one day it doesnt work and someone starts looking for a problem and finds an un authorised jiont.

as far as landline calls go though, if people ring it would ring on sll phones attached. or their may be people chatting away from time to time if the handset id picked up to listen. Try calling some of the numbers from the bill and see who answers.

Also there may be a device which shuts of other extensions when the line is in use for calls so there may be periods of no dial tone when the handset is picked up too.

With regards to the broadband i am not sure, but with virgin media the modem I use is paired to my connection. I tried to use my old one from the last house to see if it would work but the mac address was different so would think this could be the same for BT modems. (not sure though)

A little more info on the scenario, I havnt seen this but apparentley there is an unauthorised looking connection onto the BT wire that runs into the wifes aunties house. This "dodgy" looking connection runs into next doors house via a window!!! and apparentley this neighbour who doesnt have a landline has popped round to my wifes auntie and said my internet connection is down so YOUR PHONE LINE MUST BE DEAD. he also added that a bloke fron up the road did this connection for him. Hence they think he may be piggybacking the connection and avoiding any charges.

I apologise if this sounds like nonsense but again I re-iterate that the people I am talking about now next to nothing about this sort of thing!!!

As i said above one internet connection, one router , you can not have both houses using the same line for different accounts.it is possible to use the phone line but surely even the most stupid of people would notice when they got the bill if there was numbers on there that they had not rang.
He is possibly using the wireless signal from the router if they have not secured it ,this could be traced if it is happening.

Unless of course he is using an old school dial up modem (very slow) but it is still internet!!!!

I'd do one of two things.

Call Openreach, explain the situation and ask them to investigate the fraud or disconnect the wire to next door and see what happens.

Are you sure that the cable along the wall is not the cable bringing the telephone line to the house ? It might be that the cable from the street with several lines in it terminates at a multiway box on the neighbour's wall and the line to the house comes from that box on the neighbour's wall.
