Does anyone here have an electric car?

I'm pretty interested in the electric cars that are being promised for the next few years... my commute to work is too far to cycle, public transport here is non-existent (unless accessed by car!!!), but my commute is well within the range of a battery-electric.

I've been dreaming about doing a conversion for about 7 or 8 years now, but one thing that has always put me off is price: you can buy the motor and controller for a reasonable figure, and you can DIY the conversion, but as soon as you put a decent battery capacity in there you're talking £5000 spent on a car that is slow and doesn't have enough range for the once-a-month trip to see family and with the life of batteries it won't pay back the initial outlay over its lifetime. But, everytime I see a DIY conversion on Youtube it rekindles that interest and I think "Hmmm, maybe I could do that?"

The Vauxhall Ampera is interesting, but I won't be in a position to drop £25K+ on a car in the near (or distant!) future.

So, has anyone here ever run an electric vehicle? What was it like? Did you build it yourself or buy it ready-made?

electric is a waste of time IMO. some folks have made some ace dragsters from leccy cars but thats about the limit of them. they are a waste of time.

in terms of greenwashing the hydrogen hybrid seems to be a far more viable prospect.

Second hand milk float could be fun - and a base for tinkering.

What about an old Benford single cylinder diesel dumper- convert that ?

Knock up some bodywork... Or use the Petter on the milk float to drive a genny.

:)

I've had a ride in the new nissan leaf electric car and it was brill went like a rocket it was so quite it had a range of 120 miles and it only costs £2.54 to charge it fully.but at a price of about 23 thousand with a gov sub still to expensive.

That seems to be a general feature of electric cars: immense torque and quiet running lead to surprising acceleration.

As you say, still too expensive now: for £23K after subsidy, when you can get a dinosaur-powered car of similar size and capability for about £13K... £10,000 buys plenty of petrol, at the moment!

empip, love the milkfloats site! I followed a link from there to the "Gulliver Technobus" site. I used to see these things whizzing down the back-alleys of Rome and never knew they were electric! Perhaps I could knock up an oversized electric MPV/campervan? Hmmm...

It's one of those things that looks good but is probably still a while off from being viable for the majority.

Get yourself a second hand Prius mate. 5 grand will get you a 5 year old motor, there are some tidy ones out there.

Other than admitting to your mates in the pub that you actually own a prius, it's a small outlay for a great saving in fuel.

Hi,

I've been working on a design for a small Diesel generator, for electric cars, for so that the customer would only need batteries for short journeys. This would keep the initial outlay for the vehicle lower. In a similar way to hybrid engines, but the engine isn't connected to the wheels directly.

I have the idea, but it is really difficult to get anyone to look at it with a view to manufacture.

Cheers, Camerart.

You might have missed the boat - they had a car on Top Gear a couple of weeks ago that was electric powered but had an on-board petrol/diesel generator to charge the battery if they got low while you're out and about. Can't remember the make or model, but someone has already done it....

Electric cars are pathetic contraptions for the tree-hugging marxist liberals of society.

One of our major customers has one for a pool car.

Everyone likes driving it, but eyewateringly expensive, only has a range of around 100 miles. Visit a site say, 90 miles away and that journey will take around 19 hours - battery recharge.

Apparently the batteries are only good for around 5 years and a £5k replacement bill.
Wonderfully green and effective eh??

That said, someone did get done for speeding in it recently. Quite a badge of honour apparently. :)

Bloke came in to give us a lecture on renewable energy. He'd been given an electric car to test-drive.

He commented on how lucky it was that there was a charging point nearby, as he only had 5 miles left.
