Hi All

Had a google and can't find an answer.

I've got a house with 2 boilers. Stupid but true.

Any ideas how I can monitor the amount of gas used by each boiler ?

Obviously I've got my main meter from which I take regular reading but that's it.

I'm thinking some kind of mini-meter installed in front of one of the boilers to give me an individual counter. Not sure if this even exists....

Any ideas ?

how about.

switch off boiler A for 24 hours and monitor gas used on main meter.
switch A back on
swithc off boiler B for 24 hours and monitor gas used on main meter.
switch B back on

Ignore children and wife complaining about lack of heat and water.
 
If they're not modulating boilers, then fit hours run meters. Each boiler uses a known amount of gas per minute whilst running, which you can measure at the gas meter.

If they're modulating, ignore this.
 
There may be good reasons for this.
Advise what sort of boilers they are and what their function is in the house.

Hi All.

Sorry for the slow response - been away.

Top Boiler (2006) is an ideal icos HE24. It covers the top 2 floors of the house. 5 bedrooms 3 bathrooms. 3 x 120L? hot water tanks.

Bottom Boiler is Worcester (2009) Greenstar 30CDi. It covers the bottom 2 floors. 2 bathrooms & kitchen. 1 x 270L hot water tank. Provides heat to Uponor UFH manifold.

Not sure if they're modulating....

Interesting in the comments about 3-4 boilers in a house. I have always assumed that running two small boilers costs more in gas then 1 larger boiler. Is this not strictly true ?
 
Total heat available is too much for the building as a whole. The lower-floors boiler is definitely too big. But overall, taking account of the benefit of not having to run long primaries top to bottom of the building, not too bad a design.

The main upside is that if one boiler goes down, then you've still got heating and hot water in half the house.
 
If it's designed and installed properly, several small boilers is much more efficient than one large one.
