Death penalty????

I am in favour of reinstating the death penalty but I am not sure it would be a total deterrent. Once an offender knows s/he will face execution (i.e. nothing to lose) there is no reason why the criminal will stop at that point. If one person has been killed the criminal might as well kill more, after all, s/he can only be executed once. Capital punishment should stop the majority of criminals from committing the ultimate sin but there are always exceptions.

It will be interesting to see what previous convictions those who killed the police officer have. I will speculate that they have many and should not have been at large anyway. Sentences are too lenient these days and many are served concurrently for multiple offences when, in my opinion, they should be served consecutively.

The last hangings in Britain were:
Peter Anthony Allen (Walton Prison Liverpool)
John Robson Walby (Strangeways Prison Manchester)
simultaneously hanged on 13th August 1964 at 08:00.

Execution is little more than ritualised murder arranged and carried out by the state for the revenge of the populace.

Sorry folks - not in my name.
Haven't we moved on from that sort of stuff?

Down in Australia now there is a man on trial and the evidence against him is only by a remote DNA match from an expert ( so called ) 12000 miles away in Britain who is the only one in the world who claims to be able to match this DNA in this way. If Aussi had the death penalty and this man found guilty on this evidence then he would swing.
Yeah that and the coincidence that he is the one identified by the girlfriend of the victim, as the one that put cable ties around her wrists and a sack over her head, before the deed. Oh and also the cctv evidence of a vehicle identical to his just down the road, being driven by someone matching his description, whereas previously he'd denied even being in the area. It doesn't help his credibility that he happens to be a drug runner. I take it you mean this case. Bad example, I'd hang the blighter on this evidence.

Around 10 women were convicted and sentanced for murdering their children in the past 20 years on one mans evidence an expert in his field
Now here you have a valid point, that was, indeed, a very disturbing affair.

The major issue here was the "expert" was just expressing an opinion, whereas the jury (led by the way his evidence was presented), took his word as scientific evidence. Nothing scientific about it. He just started spouting statistics, invented on the spot, to fit in with his own guesswork. This should never have happened in a 1st world country, but (I have to admit) it did.

Absolutely agree. The death penalty is an abomination. Why should it be a human who decides another should die? Shouldn't we leave that to God/Nature/whatever-you-believe-in? How does the death penalty make things better? It doesn't.

I recommend the film "The Life of David Gale". It is all about the death penalty. It is extremely clever.

hang the ones that there is no doubt about incarcerate the others in inhospitable setting as they wont be allowed out so no need for reform ( payback time )

on the other side of the coin

i have been falsley accused 2 times in the past when i was a younger lad

Sorry that's a myth. There is absolutely no crime on the statute books, in the UK, that carries the death penalty anymore. (I only know because it came up as a question on QI). Besides, I'm with kendor on this one, I think all murderers should be slaughtered.

Tex, thanks, I was sure this was not the case so looked up Hansards and found out that it was abolished with the ratification of the Human Rights Act in December 1998.

I do think that there should be a death penalty. Serial Killers can never be released, and thus should be executed, Police, Child and Planned murders should all atract the death Penalty.

Tex i wouldnt trust that Falconio girl as far as i can throw her and her story has been pulled to shreds.

Brightspark then you would have hung all the women i referred to earlier who were inocent and have been released

What if new evidence comes to light after the convict is dead which proves their innocence?

Fred Bassett, I take your point, however if the death penalty were reintroduced, then there should be some serious guidelines intorduced to ensure that people are only convicted int he Jury isd convinced beyond a reasonable doubt. I know this is meant to be the case now, but sloppy Police work, sloppy defence work and questionable evidence from so-called experts have all lead to serious miscarriages of justice, and all possible measures should be intorduced to prevent these in future, whether we have a death penalty or not..HOWEVER I do feel that if you have the death penalty, then this will focus the mnds of the parties involved, especially the defence lawyers, so that hopefully we get better quality trials.

If very strict and narrow guidelines where introduced as to which convictions could atract the death penalty then I do feel that we can overcome the miscarriage issue. No person should recieve the death penalty if the evidence against them is purely circumstantial, and in the cases of Infant death, then mothers should always be given the benefit of the doubt. This is not to say they should not investigate the death, but world wide evidence shows that the vast bulk are natural, if infathomable, deaths.

When I meant child killers I was refering to the like of Ian Huntley, Fred West, Ian Bradey and Mira Hindley, Cop killers, when they deliberately set out to kill the Officer..that sort of thing.

Freddie, I have never claimed that the Death Penalty is a deterent per se, I do not beleive it is in the case of those I would use it against..and that is the very point of having it. Serial Killers, terrorists and Cop killers will not be deterred, and the death sentence should be a penalty for the crime, not as a deterent.

These are people who have no regard for life, society or the rule of law, as a result if they kill then they forfiet any basic rights they had to life.

I would hope that it's intorduction would at least make a small number think twice, and if it did prevent one murder, terrorist act or kiddy killing every decade, it would be worth it.

Bringing back the death penalty would get my vote for annoying little 9 yr olds that use this forum to talk cr*p!

Who is fred basset, ? i have heard of him but cant think who he is/was
