Hi guys - Anyone got a link for a hotpoint WML540.

Had issues over the past few weeks, firstly clothes that didn't smell right. I could only put it down to the wife constantly running low temp, and a build up of gunk. boil washed a box of washing machine cleaner, smell gone.

Did a wool cycle last night, and something isnt right. Patches on the clothes that were DRY !!!

Next load was a quick wash @ 60. Que random banging noises......not quite a shockie hitting the endstop, but loud.

Add to that mild flashes from the brushes ( i'll be changing them whilst im in there anyhow)

lastly, there is no U in the output pipe, i've never checked it until tonight, but it simply wastes to under my sink, before the u bend. This worries me, as there is a chance that water can enter the machine from the sink........

Any thoughts ?

First of all no service manual only trade. Boil washes regularly with white vinegar. Wool cycle is a liquid only no powder max 1 kg load. As for banging poss overloaded. As for sparks from motor that is normal it only means carbon dust build up on commutator no need to change brushes they should last at least 5 years.

after posting that, i went to have another look. ( had a few beers, so didn't strip it. and some XXXX stole my fluke !)

Thanks for your input rocks.

I removed the output plug, nothing nasty in there, but its unlike my old machine in that there is no filter as such for large items ( my old one had a slightly curved peice of abs plastic tube with lots of holes)

the impeller moves freely as it should, springing 90 degrees as normal.

it spins up no problem, both with or without load.

BUT, upon filling my kitchen sink, and pulling the plug whilst watching the machine, i DID notice some water coming out the output, behind the impeller.

i can only presume that a lack of a u bend in the output pipe has caused kitchen sink waste to enter the machine. we use a washing basin to store and soak things in, so when its emptied, it takes a few seconds to drain. During this time, the water is above the level of the branch from the washing machine output, hence it can drain into that pipe.

I'll strip the machine, clean + dissinfect everything, check the usual and rebuild.

any tips on that machine ?

Not tonight though :)

PS - i presume that model has a maximum output temprature, and that it won't output nearly boiling water ???

White cotton is90 degrees. That's the max to do a clean in. The waste should have a no return valve on it or loop the pipe so water don't go back down in the pipe. Theres always a bit of water in the filter it stops smells rising up, bit like a outside drain and your sink trap.
