my daughter has spent near on a grand to pass driving test, then has had a look at a few cars between £500-£1500. the usual small cars corsa, clio, punto, fiestas etc.tried comparison websites etc,the cheapest seems to be £1800 for a 1.3l or less.does anyone know of ways to reduce this extreme payment or is it us being part of rip off britain! we got quote from a firm {where every little helps} for a 1.2 punto 5dr 1999 £500 to buy 18yr old main driver, dad 45yr old as named no endorsements etc £6200 wtf

Nope, experience and no claims, my m8ts 21 yr old daughter 2 yrs passed no claims fiesta still 1k that a out of london postcode too.

About the going rate just lots of phone calls net searches ,do try fully comp as well as 3rd party.
In her interest always leave her as the main driver and a second driver added to reduce cost. That way she builds up her own ncb

I do feel that insurance companies are ripping young people off. My first car in 1980 (age 24, passed driving test at 20) was a Hillman Hunter. (1725cc engine) TPFT insurance cost me £120 (just over a weeks wages at the time). Thought my first quote at that time was expensive. Comparison between then and now,, Then,, insurance, a weeks wages for a years insurance....... Now,, insurance, probably 3/4 of a years wages for one year ,for a 20yr old.
Trouble is, the insurance companies have you firmly by the dangly bits and they bloody well know it.

My arse are they.
Not when you take in to account
Most young people have got cars that are more likely only afew yr old, worth twice as much as cars we had, more likely to be written off rather than repaired by the insurance company nowdays.

Shame these large insurance costs the teens are paying don't seem to
be on their minds when their sitting up your ar*e or overtaking in stupid places.

hi im 18 now and have been driving for nearly a year, my first car was a corsa 1.2, all of the quotes i was qiven were between 3000-15000, and that was with my mam owning the car!!!, i managed to get a quote for 2100 again with my mam owning the car and me driving ocasionally which is nearly finished, ive just sold the corsa and am looking for a car with a bigger boot ect for work, and ive managed to find a quote for 2300 by myself, i think your daughters quote is pretty great even though it is sill quite expensive.
it just shows the difference between lads and lasses insurance quotes that the government were ment to be sorting

The value of the car is irrelevent.

A kid in a £500 corsa can easily generate at £million plus claim when they cripple some poor b*gger due to their lack of experience and judgement, coupled with their unshakeable belief in their own infallability and immortality.

Fact is that under 25 drivers generate a massively disproportionate amount of insurance claims. Only fair that they pay the costs rather than lump it onto better and safer drivers.

Personally, I'd change the law to allow over 16's to drive scooters etc, but not allow anyone under 21 to even sit in the driving seat of a car - they're nowhere near as mature or responsible as 18 year olds were 20 odd years ago!

There should be a concerted effort in reducing the number of false whiplash and accident claims.
They are pushing up the cost of insurance for everyone, there are some safe drivers amongst the 18 year olds, why are they all tarred with the same brush?
The first years insurance should be at a reasonable rate..£500 or thereabouts, if they prove themselves then, the same premium for their second year.
But if they have or cause an accident that is proven, then their insurance should increase fourfold, this might be an incentive to safe driving.

Gingerbreadman,

Have you looked at a limited mileage classic car policy? Maybe contact the Morris Minor's Owners' Club for example, and see what they can offer. She may not want to drive such an old car, but it may be a relatively cheap way of building up some no-claims.

Classic car policies tend to be over 21 only.

well in the paper today, its reckoned that the age group 17-25 have the most reduced percentage drop for accidents.

when i passed my test 24 years ago i had a quote on a renault 17 of £1200 t/p/t i went round the corner and got another for £294.
when my missus(17 years ago) wanted to learn we had a quote on a nissan cherry zx turbo( )of over £3k  sure enough we didnt get her on my insurance

they also reckon if you get a black box fitted this should reduce the cost?

New drivers need to stay below 1litre engine size to get any sensible insurance quotes.

I would make the following observations

The OP should be glad he is insuring a Daughter and not a SON
my 18 yr old got quotes between £3,800.00 - £12k YES £12k!!!

On another note Mrs Boilerman2 and myself were out in our MX5 today (in the sun) when on a country road an old boy 70 -80 years old comes flying round the corner on our side of the road I had to go off road to avoid a collision - so is it ALWAYS young drivers???

32 here, till 2 years ago all my insurance was about the £350 mark and had been for years, last years was over £400 this year im looking at £470!!!

clean lisence never ever had any points, and max no claims discount, its a damm disgrace, my insurance has went up 2 years running, the £350 insurance was on a 2.0 hot hatch, got a 1.8 boring thing now, its like everything else the price just gets more and more exepensive.

so i dread to think how much a new passer is going to pay but that price does not surprise me.

it isnt just 18 year olds,
my bro in law passed 4 days ago.so hes been getting quotes for some basic cars not over 1.8 ltr and some of the prices he is getting are in the region of 2k.HELLS BLOODY BELLS.
