We have just spent lots of time sanding the old parquet flooring which was under the carpet in our 1950 house. Not sure what the wood is - it was dark but went light after sanding (sanded oak colour with a hint of cherry). We have put one coat of clear Osmo Hardwax oil on the floor and the colour has turned very dark/bright red. The bright redness is overpowering the room and I was wondering if there is a better finish we could use so that it is not as dark or bright red?

If there is a better finish, will we need to sand off the finish just put on?

Hi
You could post a picture and we will have a go at guessing the species!
Your only other options to HardWax Oil would be a coloured oil or a lacquer. Speak to the manufacturers and get some free samples.

Regardless of which other route you go, the Osmo would have to be removed.

You've got a tropical species, which will show its natural colour when a natural clear finish is applied - no matter if it is HWO or varnish.

At a guess it could be Merbau blocks, check to see if there are little flecks in the wood structure.

A water based lacquer will give you slightly less colouration and closer to your before picture than a HardWax Oil, a bourneseal (if you can find a solvent based one) will give a slightly more uniform slightly darker surface.
You could also stain the floor, but to be honest, with a fantastic wood like that it would be a pity to hide it.
It all depends on whether you feel it is worth sanding off to try again.
